I rooted my Nexus 4 yesterday. Easy as pie once you know what every option does, what fastboot mode is, etc

I currently have CM 10.1 running and love it. It's pretty much the stock 4.2 Jellybean I know and love but with more customization (now I know why everyone raves about customization). Any suggestions for a first time root user? I currently have a CPU app restricting my processor's frequency so the battery can last a bit longer and I'll be backing up all of my changes today but other than that I haven't explored other stuff outside of those things.

Thanks!

be carefull when deleting system apps and ALWAYS keep backups of system apps

you can rename your phones build name and phones version (which is what most of the tards in xda do at some devices)

link2sd you can install way  more apps to your phone once you configure your sd card

there was an app called adfree (which is now deleted) if you can find its apk you can get rid of most ads on your phone

Firstly, welcome to the dark side :P

Titanium backup is a must have app, it allows you to backup and restore apps and data, very useful when flashing new ROMs and it allows you to uninstall any system apps while also keeping a backup in case anything goes wrong. I also like to use AdFree.

If you like CM's customizability, you should try out AOKP or Paranoid Android they have many more features and customizability than CM although they are slightly later than CM with the updates. I'm currently running CM on my phone and AOKP on my tablet, although I will probably be switching to PA on both whenever the next android update is released because PIE interface and HALO notifications (I don't have much time to tinker right now :D).

1. install Paranoid Android or PA/AOKP hybrid ROM

2. apply phablet UI and fullscreen mode with navigation pie

3. install Greenify (will really help with battery life)

4. install FsTrim (configure weekly or bi-weekly scheduling WITH system TRIM)

5. Install Titanium backup

6. install adfree

7. Experiment with underclocking, see if your phone stays stable and still runs smooth (woo, more battery life)

8. laugh at all your iPhone and WP using friends

I'm already doing half of those things lol. Thanks!

Most recently I've been experimenting with boot logos and lock rings.

Like the others have said, Titanium Backup (and the pro key, of course).  Must have for root users.  Orange Backup is useful as well.

I personally prefer AOKP over Cyanogenmod, but that's just personal preference.

Definitely play around with custom kernels; they usually have better battery life, updated drivers, and random little quirks that make life easier.  Undervolting is cool, but can be more trouble than it's worth.

I don't have much more to say.  Just explore xda, play around with stuff, and have fun with it.  :P

  • 2 months later...

If you're into having some fun with some MITM attacks within your own home of course and with the permission of the network admin. Have a look at Droidsheep and Faceniff. They aren't on the play store though so you'll have to look around a bit.
