Is this Overkill?

Yes this is my first post, long time Lurker first time poster and have been watching Linus for years!!!

 

So when it comes to tech I have kind of a 2 part "problem" 

 

Part 1: Everytime I think of a new build, I want to build it, leaving me with systems all over the house and all over my parents house

Part 2: I always try and OVERKILL everything, and realize later it SOOO wasn't needed

 

Which brings me to this post

 

Newest build 

 

5950X

256GB Ram

4 GEForce 3090's

 

besides being COMPLETELY AWESOME, is there a point? like seriously? I know we are all basically horsepower junkies here but is this a massive waste of money and pointless??

I am a fan of overkill, so you won't hear me trying to convince you otherwise.

Is it a sound financial decision? Hell no but this is our hobby and for some, our jobs.

In fairness don't we all kind of do things to overkill in the tech world? maybe a sense of Future proofing it? or to say "I couldn't have possibly done any more" lol

Sorry but 4 3090s is a joke right?? If you aren't a scientist I don't think you need 4 3090s plus the higher and higher you go you'd get the same experience as if you have 2 or 3 RTX 3090s.

Also saw the Linus Vid where SLI is kind of dead these days too, so that almost made me call it off

ALSO!!!! if the 3090's are not all the same brand (which will be likely) will that matter? does it affect linking?

Technically no I believe, but it won't work since the connectors are usually in different places.

 

I'd get 2 3090s maximum though (even that isn't worth it imo), 4 won't do anything in any games most likely

Why? You will get the best performance possible with 1 3090.

I can get em all same brand but that would put this on a bit of a hold for a little while to get all from the same brand.. which is OK

From the LTT video, there was no performance gains or there was worse performance compared to 1 3090. 

Skip too 12:56. It's only 1 game but is a good example of SLI performance with 3090s

I mean you could, but why? NVIDIA is slowly killing SLI, and most AAA games aren't supporting it well anyway.
I doubt any upcoming games will support it, and if they do, there will be no performance difference

Actually I was in search of SERIOUS answers and if you look above I got them, actually found some VERY useful info here, and very glad I made the post.. has nothing to do with $$, most of us here are tech heads and thats what we choose to spend our money on even if it is irresponsible as all hell (and usually is for me anyway)

You think more games will crossfire with AMD in the future? I mean the 3090 smokes AMD at the moment but if the crossfire is in play that can change when your putting 4 lol

AMD is also killing off crossfire. I'm pretty sure that gives you an answer.
