Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I’m experiencing with my PC. I built it back around 2016 and have had no real problems until now. About a year ago now my PC started occasionally making a loud noise when I would boot it up. It only happened every so often (maybe once I’m every 15 boots however it could have gone longer without doing it) but recently it has been becoming more frequent and for the first time today the noise started after my pc had been on for about 7 hours. I usually get rid of the noise by turning off the pc and turning it back on until the noise goes away since I’ve never had time to fix it however I really should get to the bottom of it

I’ll see if I can attach a video of the noise as it has gone away for now so I can’t get any new recordings.

Originally due to the noise sounding rotational I thought it might’ve been a hard drive but all my hard drives seem fine and I’ve health checked them and they all seem clear there too.

The noise sounds to me like a fan bearing but I’m finding it hard to find the issue since the noise comes and goes. From hearing the volume of the noise I would say that the noise is coming from the top or backside of my pc. I have one fan mounted at the back and a radiator with two fans mounted on the top of the case. The graphics card is a GTX 1080ti.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

you sure thats from your pc and no a sound effect from a horror game? That sounds scary as hell

fr tho it doesnt sound like fan rubbing or coil whine. Could it be your psu maybe? ive never heard anything like that

OUTDATED JAN 2021 ===========> Check out my pc building guide! might be useful tho

It's great for planning new builds, getting a reference on where to start, or seeing what you need to play what games.

It also shows what I recommend for upgrading your stuff!

cpu - ryzen 5 3600

gpu - gtx 1070

ram - (2x8) 3200mhz

ssd - 970 evo plus 500gb

ssd2 - 860 qvo 1tb

mobo - asrock b450m hdv r4.0

psu - evga b5 550w bronze

I wish it was a horror game haha

I'm going to try give my PC a proper clean out and try tighten all screws. Issue is because it isn't constant I don't think it would be the PSU because surely that would be constant since it's always being used?

Actually, to me it totally sounds like it could be a fan. Not rubbing, but maybe somehow loose? Is there anything you can do to induce the noise? Heavy workload? If so, I'd say unplug one of your fans when the power is off (and PSU turned off), boot up, and induce the noise. If it still happens, power down, plug the fan back in, and unplug a different fan. Hopefully you'll be able to isolate a bad fan and replace it.

I was hoping to try that but theres no cause to the noise it seems it just seems to be random. That's whats making me think it might be something else because if its a fan it should happen once it passes a certain rpm if its not working correctly I would think
