For gaming at least, the CPU usually ages the best, while the GPU becomes the bottleneck.

I would argue with you there - my Celeron M 370 has definitely aged worse than my ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics.

if you're asking what will be worse in 5 years, at least with older laptops and i'm sure will be generally the same, cpu ages far worse especially if there are no dedicated graphics. early 2010's laptops most likely have dual core cpus which now struggle in today's world even on idle. This is mostly for general use. If you intend on gaming on a laptop, first of all you're crazy, second of all the gpu will age far worse with the increasing demand with new game titles.

As laptop gets older would cpu matter more than gpu like say after 5 years?

The laptop I fixed up for my grandmother saw a large increase in performance going from the broken Pentium T4200 to  Core 2 Dueo T9400, which is far faster than some CPU 5-6 years newer that are still found everywhere. The iGPU however really doesn't have an effect on anything (it used to handle Windows Aero just fine). A better HDD and 4 GB of RAM also helped make it last longer too.

I upgraded my grandmother's old laptop from an M380 to a Pentium M 770 - and it was a huge improvement especially with graphics (the shitty Intel graphics rely on the CPU for a fair bit). Oh and the laptop no  longer needed to lower the FSB speed to save power because the Celeron doesn't have speedstep.

My brother had use of it for a little bit after my mum gave her a better laptop (it now has 2GB RAM and an 80GB HDD) hence Ben10 stickers.

I might give it a Pentium.

I tried to give it a Core 2 Duo T5600, but it's not supported, so I'm stuck with 1C/1T.
I know how to open it really well know.

Yeah, you won't be getting any dual cores in it. BTW, I added a screen shot with my CB11.5 runs.
You can also see the large improvements with the upgrades I did to my grandmothers old and "new" laptop .

the store in my area have legion 5 spec at amd ryzen 7 4800h w/ gtx 1650 and intel core i5 with rtx 2060. Been wondering which one should i get.  Only do some occasional gaming but mostly doing on productivity task like CAD

Get the one with the Ryzen 7. It is vastly superior for productivity - and gaming should still be fine on the GTX 1650.
The Ryzen 5 4500U @ 15W (no SMT) beats my old @ 4.8GHz i7 4790K (120W+):

My sister is very happy having gone from the i5 2540M (no dGPU) to her Ryzen 5.

the good reviews on amd cpu and the 8 core 16 threads is really compelling

I use a 1st gen i5 580M with 8GB RAM and a 500GB Samsung SSD, I use it daily running Xubuntu Linux. It struggles a little with 60fps youtube at 1080p but the screen isn't even 1080P. I'd say the biggest detractor for me is the screen. It's got poor viewing angles and it's got bad motion blur. The CPU and iGPU are weak and the iGPU lacks some features I need for a few games I'd like to run, but otherwise it's a fine machine for web browsing work.

Depends entirely on what you do with it and user demands.I would argue that what matters most to most people is simply disabling updates to keep the thing responsive well into the future (after trimming the fat).

-> Moved to Laptops and Pre-Built Systems

You mean like performance or general longevity? Because for latter cooling is the most important thing. Then comes CPU, drive and RAM. I just gave my 5 year old laptop to my mom. Its bit too slow for my main use which is streaming. Its plenty for her to use for general browsing and office software. All depends on what the purpose of the laptop is. 5 years is already long time with modern hardware, and I'm always surprised to see laptops which would be over 10 years old and still have all original parts. Having cooling failed on 3 myself.
