CPU VS Motherboard

Go to solution Solved by YeroJero,

I think I have just found the solution to my problem.

Will this cpu: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80633i74960x

Work with this MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131802R

I'm going to try not to hit the $15k mark and go for $10k but If I hit 15k then I guess I will just have to work my ass off a little bit more.

Yes it will but I'd probably use the 4770k useless you are doing some pretty high end 3D rendering work. Newer gen CPU = newer, better supported features on the motherboard.

You have $5k in Monitors and $5k in GPU's and CPU. You are already over 10k

You can get 4k monitors for as low as $700-800 now.

Alright so long story short, after watching linus's ultimate overkill build video

I have decided to base my overkill build on his but change some of the components.

Alright so now that that is out to the side, I want to include this cpu in my build. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80633i74960x

The only problem is that the ASUS Maximus VI EXTREME that I was planning to use has a diffrent cpu socket.

Sure I can go with a go with a gigabyte LGA2011 board but will it be worth it switching out the board for a better cpu or just to keep the Maximus and go with a 4770k (which I already have in my old build)?

If you find a board with a LGA2011 socket make sure it has 4x16 PCI-E slots due to I will be quad sli-ing gtx titan blacks.

Uhh you already have a 4770k... why not just keep your money?

QuadSLI fails and is a waste of time doing. 2 way SLI will be fine in the Dual 8x mode Z87 allows.

Because I'm doing a total overkill and I am keeping the 4 way sli. How else would I play on a tri surround 4k display?

Personally I'd rather have a nice holiday with that money but...

4770K is fine for that.

Gen3 8x is fine, I think the ROG board has 3 of them so 3 way SLI (effectively 1 GPU per monitor I guess...) would be OK. 4 way scales like 40% from there.

You do realize you are going to spend $15,000 on this computer, right?

I have no clue where you buy your monitors and gpus but I think that you are getting ripped off.

4k monitor x 3 = $2400: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-U28D590-28-Monitor-UHD-4K-3840-2160-Resolution-HDMI-2-Display-Port-1-/231166887848?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item35d29ec7a8

Titan black gpu x 4 = $4040: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Support-Graphics-06G-P4-3790-KR/dp/B00IEV313U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395150193&sr=8-1&keywords=titan+black

CPU = $999 : http://www.microcenter.com/product/418178/Core_i7-4960X_36_GHz_LGA_2011_Boxed_Processor

Total: $7430 Also by the time that I get enough money the prices of everything will drop.

Thanks for the help. I will still be going with the LGA 2011 I just needed to know if it was compatible.  :)

Yes a 4960X would. But for the extra $400 or so it is over a 4930K it only offers a marginal improvement (less than 5%).

But I don't really think my help is useful with something I think is a silly waste of money as I won't be objective so I'll leave this thread alone.

Problem was solved thank you and don't worry when I'm making a video about constructing my pc I'll make sure to put you into the list of "People who didn't believe me" at the end.

For a decent 4k monitor you will be spending 5k for 3 of them.  You linked to TN monitor, so have fun with horrible colors.

Also, the price won't be dropping. The 3960x is 2 years old and it still costs MORE than the 4960x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116491

GPU's haven't really dropped in price either.

There's a difference between "not believing" and me saying I think it's a silly waste of money.

By the time you get enough money. That build will no longer be overkill... Why not save for a nice car instead?

I second this.

Sure, the monitor is 4k but resolution isn't everything when it comes to monitors. What type of panel is it? TN. TN panels have some of the worst color reproduction to get faster response times, whereas IPS panels have beautiful color reproduction for 4-5ms more input lag. (which I can't see a difference between, and most users can't)

By the time you get enough money. That build will no longer be overkill... Why not save for a nice car instead?

I second this as well.

The most expensive isn't always the best option, and even when it is the best option, it only remains that way for a few months. I guarantee you in the next 8-15 months there will be a card much better than the Titan Black available that will laugh in your rigs face.

Don't confuse any of what I've said as disrespect, I am only trying to help you out. Take some great advice from @WoodenMarker . He taught me to buy only what you need to get the job done now and save for upgrades. Sure, I could have bought SLI Titan Blacks for Ray-Traced 3-D rendering, but a single 780ti gets the job done well enough for me.

Just make sure you know what you're doing before you spend the price of a new car on a PC. That is all.
