So I've looked at the HD58x's and the X2HR's now for a while. I created a topic before and got some answers but I do not know if going from my DT 990's to the X2HR's will make me happy. Now I do game a lot. I play competitively but I do still want a big soundstage for immersion and enjoyment. The X2's have a bigger soundstage but apparently really bad imaging compared to the 58X's. Is the imaging that bad compared to the 58X's? Or is it still good enough? The 58X's are hard to return and the X2's are easy since amazon is really nice. Do I go for the X2's and then return if I don't like them and then get the 58X's?

EDIT: Gonna add something here. Since I'm used to the sound of the DT 990 pros, I'm unsure if I'd like the mid forwarded sound of the 58X's since I don't listen to that type of music were they shine at. I also want good comfort. I am also open to hearing if planars would suit gaming and music more if I am used to dynamic ones.

PM/DM me if you have any questions about audio.

Hard to say honestly, I don't have the X2HR yet but have heard the X3 for a couple minutes and they are silky smooth.  But that involved no gaming or real critical listening.  Finding something for gaming is really tough because there are so many factors.  I have 4-5 pairs of headphones and tend to go to my worst sound signature headphones because they are very open meaning I can easily hear my own voice when talking on comms.  Also the sound stage is immense and I think the imaging is decent, though I haven't really dove into the realm of what good imaging is.  I'm thinking of getting some HarmonicDyne Zeus because they're supposed to show you what great imaging is, but they're $350.

I like to get a pair of headphones that excelle at one trait so that I can experience that trait myself and fully understand what people mean when they say something like "soundstage" or "imaging".

There are so many boxes to be ticked when looking for a pair of gaming headphones, even more when you want to add in a mic, that depending on your needs it could be best to leave it to a good pair of gaming branded headphones like the Tygr-300r or the PC-37x

Honestly I didn't give you any usable advice, however I haven't experienced legit imaging before and on top of that I don't have exacting requirements for gaming.  All I can say is that the X2HR is going to have a silky smooth sound signature and great sound stage while the 58x is going to have a sound stage that is very intimate and right around your head but probably better imaging while still being a warm signature.  The 990's are very V-shaped so either of your choices will be a different sound signature and a worthy experience.  Unless you are doing competitive gaming I'd think the imaging from either would be sufficient.

Audio go Brrrrrr

Thanks. I think I'm leaning towards the X2's now because the comfort "looks" better and they do have memory foam pads which I have on my 990's now. Hmm. I do like to try out something new but it's hard to return the 58X's if I don't like them. Also, I edited the post. Do you have any experience with planar headphones?

I have the HiFiman HE-400i and Fostex T50rp which are planar and I have the Sennheiser 6xx and Beyerdynamic DT880-600ohm which are dynamic.

As a general rule of thumb the planars are going to be harder to drive, my 50ohm fostex are almost as hard to drive as my 600ohm 880's.  Planar's don't like tubes.  Planar's have a better chance at good bass.

Also remember that both the 58x and X2HR can have pad's swapped (I'm pretty sure at least)

Audio go Brrrrrr

Which one between these two would be an interesting choice for gaming considering imaging and soundstage are important.

I would go x2hr for exactly the reason you mentionned ... if you don' t like them you just return them and try the other.

So fun headphone, V-Shaped according to Joshua ... might souds a bit like the 990pro

Here are some reviews of the gaming side.

Thanks, I've seemed to have made my mind up now. So the 58X's are gonna have great imaging, less soundstage and is made for calm and more casual users for specific genres of music. The X2's are more fun and DT 990 sounding but have more bass and a lower bass extension. I like soundstage and I think the imaging is good enough. I'm gonna buy the X2's when they're available.
