Will My 1950x Be a Bottleneck With a 3080?

Go to solution Solved by xg32,

for modern AAA titles, it'd be about a 30-35% bottleneck, maybe more, not less.

it likely falls slightly above the 4770k if lucky.

some GN 2080 ti benchmark with older cpus back from july, the 1600/1700/2600 should be close to TR1 in gaming.

rdr2 1080p benchmark cpu

I've had a ryzen threadripper 1950x with a 1080Ti for about 3 years now and after getting 50 fps in cyberpunk on lowest settings (and for future games ofc) i've decided want to upgrade to the RTX 3080.

My 1950x is overclocked to 3.7Ghz all cores for about 1-2 months now (was base clock before that),so it shouldn't lose any performance for a while. Will it give me any bottlenecks if I get the 3080 (and maybe overclock it)? Because speed-wise, 3.7x16 is still decent even in today's standards, right?

PSU is 1000W, so I should be fine on that regard.

thanks.

Why's that? some newer CPUs like the 5800x or 5900x have the same and even lower speeds (3.8x8 and 3.7x12) and im guessing they wouldn't pose a problem, right? Is it just newer hardware that works better or... how does it work

They turbo much higher and they have better architecture and IPC. Basically, gigahertz is like RPM for a car, it's one metric of performance but there is no way to determine real world performance without more context and statistics.

ipc difference and single core speed difference, just a quick estimate, 3.7 on a zen 1 is about 60% of what a zen 3 cpu can do in gaming.

obviously it depends on the game, on older games it'll be completely fine at 144hz, on a newer game or anything ubisoft it can be quite slow. zen 1's strength was always an achitectural introduction to more cores, chiplets not single core speeds.
