Best thermal paste & application method

My CPU is a 6700k and Cooler is a H100i V2

I ordered thermal grizzly kryonaut online as its what I've used for a while now but it's going to be another three days before It arrives and I need it tonight.

There's a local computer store I can go in and they have these thermal compounds, I'm wondering which are best for my hardware config. The cooler has a copper base.

All the pastes cost $9.99 apart from the Mastergel Pro and GC Pro that are $12.99

  • Thermalright Chill Factor3: 4g - $9.99
  • Arctic Silver 5: 3.5g - $9.99
  • Arctic Silver Ceramique 2: 25g - $9.99
  • Arctic MX-2: 4g - $9.99
  • Cooler Master HTK-002: amount not listed - $9.99
  • Cooler Master Mastergel Pro: 4g I think? - $12.99
  • GELID Solutions GC PRO: 5g - $12.99

Based on this toms hardware ranking It seems the Thermalright CF3 is about the best.

I've always spread the Kryonaut paste as recommended by the manufacturer and noticed better temps than putting a blob or line on the IHS.

Should I should spread any of the ones above? I can't find much info on the CF3 but apprently its recommended to spread that too.

Thanks.

There's no such thing as "too much" paste, only too little will affect your temperatures. Usually a pea size will do just fine on the smaller chips but on a Threadripper for example, a pea is never going to cover the full IHS. By spreading out, you will cover more of the IHS than a pea, but a pea is a lot easier and quicker to apply and covers almost the full IHS as well.

EDIT: LTT did a video about application methods. Results at 7:54

They don't seem to have MX4 from the website sadly. All the pastes cost $9.99 apart from that Mastergel Pro and GC Pro which are $12.99. Feel like I'm overpaying compared to online but I need it asap so don't have much choice with pricing.

The model number for the Mastergel Pro is MGY-OSSG-N15M-R1 which I think is the older revision, seems the same as the newer one but the amount isn't listed, I think its 4g though.

Then it should be fine though. As you can see from my link, the difference vs kryonaut is ~2 C with 8700k@1.3v w/Asus Ryujin 360 cooler

Honestly any of those will be fine. If this is for a gpu then you do have to spread it out as the cooler does not spread the paste around much if at all. Otherwise just drop a big blob onto the center of the cpu and mount the cooler on it. The pressure of that will spread it around

Yeah thanks I think I'll just get the Master gel pro. Seem to get a lot more than Kryonaut which is only 1g

Yea. Kryonaut is pretty expensive and hyped. Also really nice, but so should the Cooler Master be. They have been in the game for ever..

Out of all of those listed I would go with CFIII, the best stuff in that list.

AMD R9 9900X | Thermalright FW Pro Black, 3x TL-B12E | Asus Strix X670E -F | 64GB G.Skill 6000C26
Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC | WD SN850, SN850X, 2x SN770 | Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | ProArt PA602
Adcom GFP-345, Adcom GFA-555, S.M.S.L D1+PS100, Cerwin-Vega! CLSC-15, Monster HDP-1800

Hey thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.

I contacted the store and they only had AS5 in stock. Ended up deciding to just wait because it didn't feel worth spending £5.80 to get there and back and then the £9.99 on it.

Seems to be impossible to buy thermal compound physically here. I've spent the past few hours looking at hundreds of computer stores and only one had one paste in stock that was AS5.

I was wondering if toothpaste would work fine until Saturday when the Kryonaut arrives. I noticed toothpaste was 13.3C hotter than kryonaut in the stress test by toms hardware. I've looked at a few other tests and it seems toothpaste isn't that bad temporarily, my only worry would be it having some kind of oil or ingredient that is impossible to get off the ihs and cooler later.

I wouldn't do it. If you do, lay your case down on its back. AS5 isn't terrible, its actually pretty decent.

I ended up cycling to the store, about 10 miles, and when I got there they had Arctic MX-4. Turns out that was the only one they had but it wasn't even listed on their website, not an issue because that's what I wanted anyway.

Found out that the paste application is fine and my cooler is dead though. Replaced it with a bequiet shadowrock lp and cpu package never goes above 50C when stress testing with aida64 vs 40C at idle and 95C at max load with the h100i v2.
