from what i've seen in reviews, they cap out at 6 cores / threads.

but this will change in the future. as more developer will eventually support multicore.

I'd say the optimal utilization is with 6c/12t CPUs these days in gaming. Anything higher will give extremely diminishing returns. We're talking maybe 2-5% more performance, if any at all.

 

But more importantly, it's not really about the core count: You can take an 8-core CPU like a 10700K in a game that does take advantage of more cores, like Assasins Creed Odyssey, but you still get more performance with 6 faster cores like with a 5600X.

 

It's not about core count, but about the general performance class of each CPU. My phrasing might not be the best, but I hope you understand what i mean...

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

i was asking how many threads games can use, not which cpu config performs best, but thanks anyways

Then you didn't understand my point. It's not about core/thread count. Most games use as many threads as you have, but not efficiently.

so you are telling me a game that is 20 years old will still use more than 1 thread, even you're getting diminishing returns in performance? that doesnt seem to  be the case because even the few % should be measureable, while i remember back when i build my pc in january 2015 in the vast majority of benchmarks the i5 4690k performed exactly the same as i7 4790k on same clock, but iwth your logic the i7 should have had 3-5% more performance

Thats why i said "most". My guess was you meant mostly current games.

The additional performance is just very small. For example with the Ryzen 5000 lineup: The 5600X is only slightly outperformed by the 5800X, 5900X and 5950X. But not because they have more threads, it's because they have a slight edge in clock speed combined with more threads. We're talking maybe 5% difference between the 5600X and 5950X in gaming.

 

What i'm trying to say is: Games don't scale to thread count, but to the CPU's overall performance due to it's architecture. They don't care how many threads you have and will try to leverage what you have to the best possible extend. But how much they will to that depends on how the developers implement it.

 

So there is no general answer to "How much threads do games use?".

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
