Which headphone is better?

I'm planning on purchasing a new pair of head phones for my newly built PC. I don't know much when it comes to audio, I use apple earpods right now. I play mostly FPS and RPG, with a few other genres, I also listen to music like hip-hop, jazz, rock and others.

The headphones I've been looking at are:

Audio-Technica ATH-M50S http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U

Beyerdynamic DT-990-Pro-250 http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392170572&sr=8-1&keywords=dt990

I'm going to use the modmic 2.3 or 4.0. I haven't decided yet. (any advice would be appreciated)

I'm also not using a amp and I don't plan on using one. I also want to use the headphones on my iPhone 5 and other devices with ease.

Please any help would be awesome! Thank you!

The M50 might be the better choice if you plan on using them in public. Open headphones are not exactly the most private thing out there :P

Current PC: AMD FX8320 || PNY GTX 770 || 2x4GB || ASUS M5A97 || Corsair TX 750 V2 || Asus Essence STX || CM Storm Enforcer
Peripherals: Logitech G500S || Cooler Master Quickfire TK || Audio-Technica AT2020 || Focusrite iTrack Solo || Q701 + DT990 Pro

I'm not sure if I'm going to use them out. I'm so used of just using the apple headphones and not having something on my head as I walk around

the DT-990 would be a better choice, hook it up with a soundcard that can drive the headphones and you'll be amazed.

my brother has a DT-770 one and i've heard them and they sound amazing

The DT990 would be the better choice IMO, but they might not get to an adequate volume level for you if you're just using onboard audio (you might be luckier with one of those audio boost or pure audio thing motherboards) and phone. They're also open, so they won't be as nice for use when you're out and about.

but if you're considering M50's, I'll just say this: they're very uncomfortable, for me and many other people. they sound alright, BUT there are many other headphones that probably sound better for you in the same price range, if not cheaper, like the Shure SRH440 with 840 pads, I recommend you take a look at those instead of M50s.

The DT990s are the better choice quality wise. Your on-board sound should be able to power them as long as the motherboard isn't super cheap and has been made in the last 2 or so years. M50s are only a better choice if you also plan on using them in a public place; or if you need to block out any noise.

the dt990 is a much better headphone but wont be optimal for iphone or outdoor use.

I used my DT880 Pro 250 ohms with an iPhone and was actually able to get them pretty loud.

That is entirely subjective, for example: I listen to music on my PC at around 20-28% volume, and when a friend borrowed it, he turned it up to around 40%, something might be loud for someone, and just average volume for someone else.

But 100% was never reached was it?

no, but it was a signifcant change in volume. why do you ask? FYI it was with a pair of Shure SRH440 headphones which are quite efficient, and low impedance.

Usually there is a bit of wiggle room with on-board (much more than mobile). Even if you have to get it all the way to 75% for it to be as loud as you want, you still have about 20% more to play with. Mobile is definitely subjective though. I was just trying to say most on-board sound will get a lot of higher impedance headphones loud enough.

The motherboard I have is ASUS M5A97 R2.0 http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/

For reference of how loud I usually put my volume, on my PC with apple earpods is about 50% and on my iPhone is pretty much 85% -100%

I wont be taking the headphones out at all. They are for my PC, gaming/music, mostly gaming.

Which would be best? Also which is better closed or open?

What would be other good headphones for around the same price? i still have to buy the modmic

Thats why I said optimal rather than saying it would be very quiet, whats loud to some people I would probably not think so, its just subjective.

Open are better for what you are doing, get the dt990s and if you use then a while and they arent loud enough for you then get an amp, the dt990s are way better than the m50s
