the biggest risk is file system damage and worst case corrupted MFT

corrupted MFT can cause data to be inaccessible

 

this is why devices safely ejected or system turned off first so the write cache would be flushed to disk.

For example, if you just instantly take the cable out of your external SSD, and say you're using it as your boot drive and your computer is idling on the desktop, what will it do?
