Hi, so I have a dlink dir-819 router. I always keep a command prompt open pinging google because my internet is so unreliable.

Lately, when a second computer turns on, the internet goes from pinging 20-30ms to 1000-2000ms constantly. I have tried changing eternity cables, plugging straight into the modem (which is fine), wifi, restarting both the modem and router and even factory resetting the router, still terrible internet most days.

I have the most up to date firmware on my router, and have 3 other routers with similar outcomes to each of them.

Anyone know the reason this is happening? I've tried googling but nothing comes up like my specific situation.

I apologize if you've seen this answer in google searches, but is the second pc downloading anything? Try pinging google on the second pc and see what the ping is. If its still high with your main pc off, then its something with the second pc.

No the second pc is not downloading anything, we check. I'm not downloading anything either on the first one.

🤔 Have you tried using the the pathping command to google as shown below? It tells you exactly where packets are being dropped, if at all.

@Emile4141

🤔 You should also try pinging your modem/router to rule out the problem being on your end as well.

If hop 2 is the router, then yes that is the problem here. You're getting 18% packet loss and 809ms latency from your router to the first ISP hop, which is pretty poor performance.

If it was something like a bad wifi connection or bad ethernet cable, you'd have packet loss to the router, but that is not happening here and your LAN looks good.

I did the pathping and here is the result. I think its definitely the router (hop 2).

🤔 Yeah, its not really on your end, because there is no packet loss at the first hop which is your modem. It only starts past the second hop, and we see packets being lost all over the place after that. I'm not sure what you can do about this beyond calling your service provider and telling them where the connection is getting dropped, give them the IP addresses and such.
