Uhhh, no. Probably not. Both of them are high end parts and complement each other. Make sure you also have fast RAM, because that seems to be the biggest problem on Ryzen 5000

the 5900x is one of the fastest gaming cpus available, so only step up is a 5950x, whether that helps depends on the game, as for gpu bottleneck, could look at a 3090 or 6900xt.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

Just hijacking this thread as it looks to be solved but I have a similar issue to see if I can solve without starting a new thread.

My 3080 just arrived in the mail and on boot I've found my i5-8600K to be sweating it out hard to keep up with the 3080 with 1080p 144hrz gaming.

I've noticed that in games like PUBG on Ultra settings that my i5 with max out 100% on all 6 cores while my 3080 is only at 40% usage. I would assume this a CPU bottleneck happening as my frame rate swings wildly from 150 to 80 in seconds - even with a 144 frame limiter on.

I was thinking of getting a second hand i7 8700k to drop in while I wait for the Ryzen 9 5900X to come into stock.

Is this normal for the i5 to struggle so much and would the i7 be a good enough place holder?
