A string of ASUS PG279Q related Problems; No DP Signal after boot; Refresh Rate Stuck at 59 Hz

Go to solution Solved by Pussy_Pumper__69,

Update: I just bought a new DP Cable, to troubleshoot that as well.

I didnt think this would be an issue, as i was getting a display out and i had never heard of dp cables losing a part of their bandwith?

But it is fixed now!

I was successfully able to change my refresh rate to 144 hz and keep my video out.

So let this be a guide to all, that DP Cables work in ways that some would call.. unnatural ;)

Maybe this helped someone else,

Have an awesome, computer problem free day :)

Hello, I am having trouble w my monitor (probably?)

System Config:

i7 5960x @4,5 Ghz (stable)

Msi X99 Godlike Gaming Carbon

24 GB GSkill DDR4 Memory (GVK)

RTX 3070 msi ventus 3x

1200w bequiet! PSU

SSD 1: Transccend 256 GB (boot drive)

SSD 2: KingDian 240 GB

SSD 3: Cucial MX 2000 GB

Timeline of the problems:

It used to be that i had a 650w corsair psu. Everything was working perfectly well (cpu and gpu were stable, monitor @165 hz) , even under the heaviest load i could hit it with, so eventhough i was wary abt the possible psu problems, as everything ran fine i didnt think too much abt it.

I decide to install some rgb leds in my room. they are plugged into the same power splitter my psu is plugged in as well (i moved recently, so i reinstalled the leds, before the move, i had the exact same config with them = plugged into the same power splitter). I explicitly mention this, as when my pc posted and booted, but i had no display input, the early forum posts i looked up mentioned power issues when blackscreening after bios. So I thought to myself: Upgrade the PSU then, the leds maybe somehow made it so that the maybe already fragile power supply to the cpu and gpu was too much so no display output (obv i tried reseating the dp cable on the gpu and monitor, disconnected and reconnected the gpu and all other troubleshooting steps that one would normally do at this point).

I know the led thing sounds weird and it does, but this is the only thing that makes sense to me.

So I install a new psu. Same problem.

I reseat the GPU again. DIsplay output this time (!?). Yay!

Only low res tho and when I try updating the drivers (which i read on some forum could be the problem) I go to black screen again.

I should at this point mention that i did also test the monitor and it works fine w other computers, so it cannot be the problem, right?

Also when I say blackscreen I refer to the OSD of the monitor telling me that there is no input detected.

So I search the webs some more and find this forum thread: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/monitor-loses-signal-upon-booting-windows.2585702/

I do as this one helpful person suggests and boot into safe mode, and follow the steps outlined by him.

Next try: boot and i dont lose display within a few minutes!

I am also able to set my res to 2560 x 1440, though it only runs at 85hz. I try everything in the system panels, through the nvidia control pannel etc. I also figure, maybe the monitor is the problem so i reset it via the OSD. Now everything runs at 60 hz! When i select 144hz in the control pannel, nothing changes, its still 59 hz (going off the monitor osd), so i go to display settings and change the refresh rate there. No signal. Reset, login screen greets me w low res, that i have to change to regular res everytime i boot into windows in the display settings (presumably because of the fix of the guy in the forum?).

And now I am here.

I fear that if i revert the boot option that the forum guy suggested i will no longer be able to boot into windows tho it likely causes some of the display problems.

At the same time, I cannot really go back as I cannot fix the no display after boot error.

The weird thing is that everything worked fine before, why did it have to break??

Drivers are all up to date, i troubleshooted everything I could hardware-wise is there some weird software thing idk abt? I dont understand.

I have had my fair share of computer problems and random bs over the years and I know how and what to troubleshoot. But in this case i am done with my latin (as we say in germany, meaning not knowing any more solutions and havinge exausted ones expertise and knowledge)

I dont know what the problem is and I dont know how to fix it.

It would be very nice if you guys could help me :)

Update:

I tried changing the refresh rate through the advanced display settings > Display adaptor properties for display 1

It gives me all the options up to 165 hz, but as soon as i select anything above 85hz, blackscreen.

Again, likely due to the boot option base video I applied to be able to boot into windows, but then the question still remains how do I fix that problem?

That was what I thought. Disabled base video boot option in msconfig expecting no boot (because I thought it allowed me to properly boot into windows) and can now successfully boot into windows no prob. Res is fine, though refresh rate problems remain. everything above 85 hz and  I lose my display signal.

Also cant change refresh rate in Nvidia control panel; I can select the refresh rate I want but it doesnt let me apply it.

Also some extra thing: the monitor has a turbo button on the right side, it lets you change between the turbo refresh rate and regular one? I dont know exactly how it works as I have never used it but now it only gives me the selected refresh rate I have in windows and no other options.

Help!
