X570 Motherboards - Compatability with 5000 series CPUs

FL4XY
Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

a great number of X570 motherboards have a BIOS flashback function which allows a BIOS to be updated without the need for a CPU, ram, or graphics card. Most motherboards $200 to $300 will have the feature, and if you're interested in a specific model you can check the product page to see if the feature is advertised.

Some brands like Gigabyte have a special name for the feature (such as Gigabyte's "QFlash Plus") while brands like Asus and MSI simply label the feature BIOS Flashback.

You could also have a look at this big ass spreadsheet that has a column of data for "FlashBk Button" in the Diagnostics section, so you can search here for candidates.

you might consider some of these:

https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/product/nHxbt6/gigabyte-x570-aorus-elite-atx-am4-motherboard-x570-aorus-elite

https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/product/WKdrxr/msi-mag-x570-tomahawk-wifi-atx-am4-motherboard-mag-x570-tomahawk-wifi

I've seen a lot of articles about BIOS updates for X570 motherboards that make them compatable with the 5000 series CPUs, but, as far as I'm aware, in order to update the BIOS you would require a previous gen 3000 series CPU to actually be able to update the BIOS?

My issue is that I'm currently on an Intel-based system, and so if I buy a X570 motherboard, and a 5900X, those two won't be compatable until after a BIOS update?

Am I missing something here, or does this mean that if I buy an X570 motherboard, it will not natively support the 5900X, and there is no other solution other than buying the cheapest 3000 series CPU used just so I can update the motherboard for a 5900X?

I will complain about high prices in Norway given the oportunity.

Alright, thanks! I was considering the ASUS ROG Strix X570-E which does seem to have this feature.

So then all that would be needed is to download the latest BIOS, insert a USB into the correct port and press the flashback button (and wait for it to complete the update)?

I will complain about high prices in Norway given the oportunity.

yeah, and you can find some easy youtube tutorials on how to do this, or read the manual for the motherboard.

Here in Norway that's $565 USD ahaha... I'd be spending almost as much on my motherboard as my CPU.

Maybe on certain websites... I've always used Komplett.no, where it's currently listed at 5,099 NOK ($577.69 at today's exchange rate): https://www.komplett.no/product/1132692/datautstyr/pc-komponenter/hovedkort/amd-socket/gigabyte-x570-aorus-master-socket-am4, which is where I got the $565 figure from.
