Intel X99 question

i know that this may not be able to answered with the current details we have but whatever. but is x99 just a new chipset for 2011 or are they realising a new socket?

It is going to have 2011 pins, but it will require a new socket because it is electronically wired differently.

It looks the same physically but it s not compatible at all with current CPUs. Intel calls this socket LGA 2011-3 (current one is -2).

why wouldnt they be comparable? is it something like voltage or the cpu itself?

It's the pin outs, the socket itself is the same number of pins (2011), but it has a different configuration.

As @WunderWuffle said, the pins will be wired differently. They probably also moved something from the chipset to the cpu or vice versa.

New socket, 2011-3. Your old 2011 CPUs will not be backwards compatible AFAIK.

i wonder how much magic smoke will come out when the 2011-2 is installed?

they need to socket-proof so the 2011-2 cannot install and touch the pinbed.

but doubt they will, prolly still have 10-year supply of CPU latching assemblies.

There was no 2011-2, the enthusiast market operates on a 3 year schedule these days.
