What Wattage PSU For My Build?

Oliboy68

Hello all,

I am in the midst of putting together my build which is as follows:

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x

GPU: AMD 6800xt (or 3080)

MOBO: ASUS Tuff X-570 Plus Wifi

RAM: 32gb 3600

Storage: 1tb NVME SSD & 2tb SATA

CPU cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

Case Fans: 3 x 120mm & 2 x 140mm

Im not quite sure if I should get a Corsair RM750x or RM850x for my build? Will that be enough?

Would appreciate any advice, thank you.

(Advice on my build too if you want to)

We're not sure if the RX 6000 series will have bad transient power spikes, but if it doesn't, you could reasonably use a 650 watt PSU.

Wait for reviews to see if the power draw is reasonable from these cards.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

An RM750x would be more than adequate for those components, unless you get something like a 3080 Strix or FTW3 and shove 500W through it for no apparent reason.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

I'd say a great 650W unit or a good 750W unit would cover your needs. As @Fasauceomementioned, the reason that RTX 3000 series cards need such beefy power supplies isn't because they're consistently drawing 400-500W, but rather because they have issues with inconsistent spikes in power consumption which can sometimes trip circuit protection and cause crashes.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

On AMD’s website, the 6800xt shows a 300 watt power usage and they recommend a 750 power supply.

On pc part picker, i built my system however substituted the Gpu with a 3080 (320w) and the total usage came to 594w... Will a 650w PSU really be sufficient? Thanks.

I would advise a 750 watt unit for greater stability, though if you don't have the budget, an amazing 650 watt unit should be fine.

With a ryzen 9 3900X drawing about 150 watts and a 6800 drawing about 300, you'd have 200 out of 650 watts left for everything from the motherboard to the ram to the fans.

In terms of a quality power supply, 650 will do the trick quite nicely. A 750 or 850 watt PSU is pretty reasonable if you were planning on upgrading to a 16 core CPU and overclocking in the future.
