i assume you dont have enough spare hardware to double check board and cpu. So @Moonzy´s way is the best option you have right now.

Use the phenom, get the latest bios, flash it, reboot to make sure it still works, then switch CPU and start with only one RAM. Work your way up.

If your Board has some kind of debug LED or sth. like that you could narrow the problem down further, but updating the bios should be your first move

AM3 doesn't support the FX 8350, AM3+ does.

oh that board is an AM3+ board, so you'd only need a BIOS update for it to work.

oh, he might have the R2.0 version though, but yeah he has to check for any markings on the board itself to determine that

Wait so my motherboard is the problem?

what exact version of the bord do you hve? is the r2.0 version or normal?

but likely your board doesn't support the cpu if you have the latest bios update.

Then it wouldn't work as it's an AM3 socket and not AM3+

Do you have any way to make sure the CPU aint dead?

ATM it seems the logical conclusion. Board works, CPU should work with the latest BIOS and you did that, leaves the CPU als culprit

Actually wait the M5A97 is an AM3+ board so it *SHOULD* work with the latest BIOS, this has been highly confusing

Try updating the bios again, but there really not a good chip to use these days, id probably still try to return/sell it if it works.
