Is power consumed if the PC is shut down but the UPS is turned on?

Usually yes, as most PC"s have USB passthru now.  Minimal, very minimal.

 

But to your concept, the UPS would charge and then trickle when full like when you charge a phone.  

 

It's not like a light, off or on.  It's like a TV, with standby mode, etc.

"Do what makes the experience better" - in regards to PCs and Life itself.

Yes, consumer boards effectively have a BMC or CMC now days that allow the RGB to still work and passthrough charging. At most it's probably like 20W

Thanks for your reply. I was curious about this because whenever I switch on the UPS, it makes a loud beep sound and I wanted to avoid that when I turn on my PC late night secretly. Guess I will keep the UPS off after all.

I just have RGB keyboard and mouse which also turn off when PC is shut down. But I think that 20W will stack up if I keep my UPS on everyday for 4 - 5 hrs

It should NOT.  Energy Star and ErP requires a PSU to consume no more than .5W while the PC is in standby.  Assuming the PSU has the "CE" mark on it and was made in the last 5 years, that is.

 

Since new safety requirements require a bleeder resistor to drain the bulk cap when power is cut to the PSU  (which is 100% waste of power, I'm afraid), the cap has to fully charge every time you cut power from the PSU and turn it back on.  So you could be potentially using MORE POWER by turning the PC off and then back on again.

 

Think of it as living in the city and the traffic lights aren't synchronized so you have to stop at every block.  Turning your car off and back on again at every light is actually using more gasoline than leaving the car idle for a few seconds waiting for the light to turn green.

 

Now.. That said... Your UPS is actually using quite a bit of power keeping those lead acid batteries charged.  That is unfortunate.  But if you have frequent power failures, I don't blame you for using a UPS.

I was thinking of actually leaving the power button on as well AND no I don't get frequent power cuts all the time but some days, power will go out for less than 1 min for like 10 time in 1 day. On one such unfortunate day, it messed up my PSU and I had to get it replaced which is why I got a UPS.

It really won’t. Even at 130W 24/7 if your electricity is .12/kWh then it’ll add about $9 extra in your energy bill

Yes, leave PC and UPS on then.  I know that the on/off aspects hurt your components more than leaving them on in a standby state.

Probably not enough to register when my computer is in sleep mode it says 0 watts on the UPS.  Its probably some fraction below 1w or under a minimum recognizable amount.  Its obviously using something there is LED on the RAM still.

I have one of those too.  I use the Yeti solar panel to keep it charged when not in use.
