9700F or 9700K?

As a rule intel b series motherboards don’t overclock all that well when they overclock at all which is not that often. According to this page, hard no https://www.ocinside.de/review/mainboard_asrock_b365_pro4/4/

it was written as a review when the board first came out though which means if there is one it going to probably be jank.  Doesn’t stop you from putting a k chip on it of course.  I personally would consider a 9700k marginally more valuable as it is compatible with more motherboards and has an iGPU which is surprisingly useful occasionally for troubleshooting even when it’s just a not very good spare gpu.

I found two deals, one for a 9700F and one for a 9700K, both are the same price. My motherboard is the Asrock B365M Pro 4. Would I be able to overclock the 9700k, my motherboard supports BFB which overclocks locked CPUs. And could I use XMP to get my memory to 3000mhz.

If they're the same price, i'd get the 9700k solely for the integrated graphics it has. Really comes in handy if your gpu dies, can still use the PC until the new one arrives

I don't have the need for integrated graphics at all...

From what I read about it there seems to be a lean for the 9700k.  Looking at raw numbers on the net, the 9700k seems to be marginally faster without oc.  It’s a much hotter chip though. 95w vs 65w.  A lot of the performance numbers that favor the 9700f seem to come from it coming out much later than the 9700k and thus being attached to better hardware. 9700f seems to have excellent consistency though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Sorry, forgot CPU sockets are different for AMD and Intel, sorry

It's ok, also the 5600x wouldn't be viable as it is very much out of stock everywhere and is about $400 locally.

Can the motherboard handle the 9700K without me overclocking it at all. Can it handle the stock clocks.

The motherboard page says 8th and 9th gen socket 1151 https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B365 Pro4/index.asp#CPU

the supported CPUs button says it supports an i7 9700k(r0) and an i9 9700k(p0)

Ark intel page for chip says fgcla1151 for i7 9700k which is I think 9th gen coffee lake. Lga1151 and fclga1151 are not the same.  If it’s got an fclga socket it Might require a bios update

9400f is fclga, so that’s a bullet dodged.  9700k isn’t that big a jump over a 9400f though.  A 9900 would be 8/16 instead of 8/8

The 9700K is the top end of my budget for now. In 2 years i'll get high end Ryzen if Intel hasn't managed to beat them by then.
