First PC build help

Other details:  This is my first PC build ever and I'm building the pc from "Building a $500 AMD Gaming PC" video from Linus. He mentions you need to update the bios of the motherboard but doesn't tell you how, he also says the board might already come updated. So I was confused if I should just risk buying the board and hoping its updated, should I buy a 1st or 2nd gen cpu compatible to update it(I dont want to spend too much money on another cpu just to not use it), or should I just buy a different motherboard.
