X99 upgrade path?

Budget (including currency):

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: general gaming, multi tasking

Hi guys,

I built  my current X99 system 4 years ago, currently with 6800k OCed to 4.3ghz all core.  I know its kind of niche platform but really don't want to ditch my current quad channel 128gb memory, I am wondering any viable options with lets say Xeon out there that are a big enough performance boost in terms of gaming, multitasking and light video editing?

Also the ryzen is getting tempting every year, but wondering if there is any known news or plan where the AM4 socket will be retired? don't want jump on a "dead" platform like I did with the x99 lol

we're expecting the successor to AM4 in 2021, be that AM4+ or AM5

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Haven't looked at Xeons of that era in a while, but the general problem is that for gaming the higher core count Xeons really start to drop clock, which can hurt gaming performance.

AM4 should be nearing the end of its life. DDR5 will likely be the next big thing and require a new socket, although it is possible AMD may choose to make both DDR4 and DDR5 versions of the CPU beyond Zen 3 to aid in the transition.

Presuming 32GB modules weren't a thing when you built that system, that implies you have 8x16GB modules. Is that correct? If you have to use all that ram, that implies you either go X299 which I wouldn't recommend for gaming, or Threadripper.

Obviously if you go consumer platform instead, you can only use 4 modules.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, random 1080p + 720p displays.
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

The current gen, launched today for Ryzen, should be the last one on the AM4 socket. AMD has held up there promise to support AM4 for 5 years, which means this should be the last launch on the AM4 platform.

X99 is a dead platform, has been for many years now... since before Ryzen's original launch back in 2017 in fact. There is no upgrade path that would be worthy of really recommending on that platform honestly.

Most X570 boards should be able to support this much RAM without major issues, and its looking like you'll at least get 1 generation upgrade out of this.

next year or two, current estimates put the freshly launched 5000 series as the last of AM4. So yeah, might as well stick to this dead platform for longer.

Multitasking maybe, but Xeons are hold back by the fact that the more cores you get, the lower their frequency, hence bad for gaming and video editing.
