New PC Build for friend -- Need opinions

Budget (including currency): 750€

Country: Portugal

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, Light video-editing, "heavy" office work (20-30 tabs in chrome)

Hey guys,

I'm building a PC for my friend for about 750€ and I've came up with this parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TBQskX but I'm not 100% sure if any improvements can made to lower the overall price/to make it a better value.

The only part I'm sceptical about really is the motherboard, as it's a B450 (instead of the newer B550s) and I'm afraid that it requires a BIOS update (even though PCPP didn't give me any warning on that board).

I've been also thinking of switching the motherboard & CPU to be Intel since I've seen that the i5 10400f retails for about 150€ where I'm at (instead of the 199€ price-tag of the Ryzen 5 3600). However, that would also mean I'd have to buy a new CPU Cooler (because I don't like the stock Intel one).

Are there any improvements? Should I stick with AMD instead of going Intel?

Ventus XS cards are always on the weaker side of cooling, which means they also tend to run louder than average cards

500GB of storage is not enough if you ask me, especially on SSDs which slow down noticeably after you use up say, 80% of its capacity (because SLC cache size is relative to empty space on the drive).

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

-You could probably find a cheaper 1660 Super.

-The board has already had a BIOS update. You can tell by the "MAX" at the end which shows it's 3rd gen Ryzen ready.

-In my opinion, you should just stick with AMD.

Good build though in general, I'm sure your friend will be happy with the performance.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

I'm going over-budget already, should I go with a cheapo SSD and maybe add a 1TB HDD? (pretty sure I'll go even more over-budget).

That card is like the cheapest 1660 Super I could find where I live. I'm sure if he throws like 10 more bucks he can find a card with better cooling. I'm gonna try to convince him.

Did not know that! TYVM

Have you looked at RX 5600xt? Some of their budget options aren't much more than 250 Euros and your friend would get a decent jump in performance.

In this case either the CPU or GPU should lose some weight, i.e. get cheaper. An R5 2600 for example, will be equal in performance if he doesnt have a high refresh rate monitor to take advantage of high frame rates to the fullest.

Sadly, all the RX 5600xt's I could find cost more than 270€... https://imgur.com/a/0jgrX7T

The R5 2600 is selling for about 131€, that's a significant price drop from the 199€, not taking in count the motherboard price drops.

In the build, he can fit 20-30 bucks more in his budget, but more than that won't be possible.

Does your boy need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse?

Yes, but he will be buying that separatly. The full setup will cost around 1000€ :D

Why doesn't he want to wait a few days until the new GPUs come out

The Ryzen 5 2600 with a higher end GPU like the RX 5600xt may benefit him more than going with your inital build. He will actually save money by buying this combo as well. It depends what games he wants to play though.

He definitely could, but he just wanted me to make a build right now so he knows roughly what he's getting.

To be fair his budget is too low for the immediate new hardware. Here.
