Hey guys and gals,

I have been looking into a new cellphone for a few months, and I saw today that XDA is launching their own phone the Pro1-X, which is based off the Pro1 which is built by a company called F(x)tec which I have never heard of but I guess they are based in the UK. I guess they are also launching it stock with LineageOS 17 and Ubuntu, (along side Android 9?).

Anyone have any experience with the Pro-1 or with F(x)tec?

(Yes I saw the Short Circuit video)

Reviews haven't been supremely kind to the Pro1. It's using old hardware (a Snapdragon 835, for one thing), and the keyboard isn't as good as it sounds. F(x)tec is really catering to enthusiasts and FOSS diehards who are willing to make sacrifices to say they're running Ubuntu on their phones.

Also, keep in mind that the Pro1-X is a crowdfunded project that won't ship until March 2021, and the Pro1 doesn't have the OS perks.

What are you looking for in a new phone, by the way? One thing that guides my decisions: it's important to buy phones based on what you know they'll do for you right away, not what you hope they'll do. The Pro1-X conjures images of That Person who shouts "I'm going to use my phone as a PC!" only to realize that it's not nearly as elegant as it sounds.

Thanks Pasi123 and Commodus,

I'm kind of interested in the abilities and freedom of LineageOS, but I think the biggest thing is getting the most out of my phone, since I have to pay for it and I would never go bigger than a 6" screen, personally.

My current phone is starting to have issues with running apps and after 6-7 years, it is probably on its last year before I need to replace it due to security concerns as its running Android 6, been trying to replace it.

Work was planning to give us phones last year but "noped out" after the price of the iPhone 11 was announced and then said they planned/budgeted for this year (for September) to get everyone who needed phones which also went Not As Planned. Even though I not a fan of iOS I wasn't going to pass it up if work bought the device for my use but it does not appear to be going that way.

I'm wondering if a Pixel 5 wouldn't do the trick. Right size, great cameras in most respects, virtually stock Android with as much support as Google currently cares to offer (still short of iOS, but at least you'd have up to Android 14). I'd point to the Pixel 4a 5G, but it's actually 6.2 inches and has RAM that I'm not sure would last as long as you'd like.
