Hey Folks!

Sorry for my english, I'm Danish..

My current pc:

Ram: 16gb of 2133mhz ddr3

Mb: MSI Z97 PC Mate(MS-7850)(1.0)

CPU: I7-4790k 4.00Ghz

GPU: Geforce GTX 980

I want to get a set of 16gb ddr4 3200mhz ram (this one: https://bit.ly/2H5RrTJ), but that is not possible with my current motherboard. The problem is that if I get new ram i have to get a new cpu and motherboard but i don't know what to get. I need  CPU that has quite the same performance as my present CPU - i don't have a lot of money - and a motherboard that supports the rest.

As said in the title, im a noob and that why I really need your help.

In advance, thank you very much.

Best regards Sebastian Høilund

not having information about what purpose this machine will be put to I’ll assume gaming.

A key question at the moment is how soon do you plan on buying?  If you for whatever reason have to do it right now that’s one thing.  If you can wait even a few weeks though I would encourage it.

There are several key systems that are about to be announced that could have a massive impact on what constitutes a useful gaming machine.

You’ve got a 4/8 machine with a reasonable amount of decent memory.  It should last another few months without problems.  You’ve got a K series cpu and a z series motherboard which means you could overclock your cpu to squeeze a bit more performance out of it and extend its life a bit if you also happen to have an aftermarket cooler.   If you have a big enough cooler your beat move for the next few weeks might be to put an overclock on that currently not overclocked 4790k.  If you hit a good overclock that machine should play games reasonably well into 2021

the only stuff that would even be possible to transfer is case peripherals and storage.  There’s a strong argument for transferring only some of the peripherals and selling the old machine complete.  It won’t game that well anymore but it will still do everything else.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Yes it's being used for gaming and I'm not planning on buying anything before july 2021, I just want to know a bit more about what to buy when that time comes.

Any software you recommend for overclocking? My best bet is afterburner, but I don't know anything compared to you guys :D

Thank you for your reply!

Cpu overclocking is different, but it also tends to very wildly by processor both in effectiveness and how it’s done.  Since it will be zen3 vs rocket lake desktop and none of them are even out yet there’s not much in the way of advice that can be given.

Here's cpus byperformance/$ https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html

Find your own cpu in other charts to the left. That and your knowledge of how your cpu faired will give you a good estimate of how much performance you will need and how much other cpus use.

higher framerate requires more cpu work. I would consider it if you're considering icnreasing the fps you've been playing at.

You can do the same for gpus on that website. quadrupling resolution (1080p->4k)seems to only take 2x the performance, btw.

I would not upgrade the machine just to upgrade RAM from ddr3 to ddr4. It's a waste of money.

Yeah i get that but my main focus is upgrading the motherboard - probably didn't make that very clear.. - so i could upgrade different things, such as ram, cpu and storage, as time goes passes.

Nothing is compatible.  You can’t do that piecemeal.  Ram/mobo/cpu will be 1 unit.

No use upgrading motherboard pre-emptively. Wait until you need to upgrade cpu, or need more than 16gb memory and don't have space for more slots, that could also be a good time to replace the whole stack. Even then it's likely best to sell old ram and buy used ddr3 sticks.
