Removing headspreader from ram

vopos

I've removed the head spreader from 2 sticks of ram and on 1 some black thermal tape was left on, should I put it back onto the one it came off or is not important? And how can I remove the residue. Thank you.

If it wasn't important, it wouldn't be there. This tape was probably there for two reasons:

1. heat transfer

2. full contact with the heatspreader itself, by having another piece of material that forms to the size it has to be

Isopropyl alcohol.

Well it was important, but if you removed the HS it's now useless.

I would keep the thermal pad with the heatspreader, since its purpose is to transfer heat from the chips to it

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

I read that heat spreaders are superfluous on RAM nowadays and are mostly aesthetic so I removed them because I didn't like the look of them. I plan on making my own, can I use 3M double sided tape as the adhesive and thermal tape to replace the old one (do you know anywhere I can buy them from?) OR should I just use thermal tape and no tape?

Well if you know for sure that is the case, alright (I don't know for sure if they are a necessity, so not judging here).

I don't know where you can buy them, but if you don't have heatspreaders you can screw together, thermal tape is probably your best bet.
