Guest

hello, i'm currewntly working on a home server for file backups and sharing. no movies or stuff, just some pretty small files. this is the pcpartpicker list.https://pcpartpicker.com/user/_dd1eg0/saved/#view=ZsVyK8

i have an old gts 250 lying around. should i even put it in the system or should I get another gpu? also feedback on the pcpartpicker list is welcome. and dont tell me to get a prebuilt nas.

Any GPU works, I use an 8800GTS in mine.  Parts list looks fine, file servers are very easy to run.

Part list looks solid, only thing is I would swap the drives to Ironwolf drives if your running this 24/7.

I wouldn't bother with the GPU, it'll only server to eat power I would say

I can't stop spending money my stupid home lab, help.

I would probably prefer a CPU with an iGPU, for the sake of lower power consumption. You only need something able to provide an image, you don't really need anything that is capable of performance.

i have the gpu already and its better than intel igpu. i dont know about amd igpu but i think the gpu is better. plus better cpu temps if i have a gpu.

In all honesty you'll likely use the GPU during the set-up and install process and they take it out because the server can be entirely headless at that point, just use SSH to manage it, no need for a GPU.

Yeah, but as you said you don't really need GPU horsepower. For a server that is running 24/7 one of my primary concerns is idle power usage. I care about CPU performance only so far as it is necessary for the servers function and GPU is irrelevant, since it isn't doing anything 3D related.

For example, with my own home server, 99.9% of the time I interact only through SSH. The only time it was ever connected to a monitor was during installation (and possibly when troubleshooting).

Personally i'd get an i3 but it doesn't really matter, either of them are good CPU's.

I'd drop that aftermarket cooler and just get 1 8GB stick, that will give you an extra $80 back. Also a cheaper case like a Corsair 88R or a Antec VSK10 will give you an extra $30-40, giving you ~$110-120 in either savings, or to spend on bigger drives considering this is a storage server.

I'd get whatever is cheaper. Since you're using the server for small files and backups it shouldn't need that much CPU. Just some food for thought:

My own server is also used as a local file share and Pi-hole. It's a mini-itx with a soldered on Celeron J3060, which uses less than 10 watts and can be passively cooled. It works without issues, is completely silent and keeps my power bill low.
