If you don't have a specific reason for a VPN, don't use it. You can actually be less secure by using one, depending on how you look at it.

I will always recommend ProtonVPN. They're not for profit, and are based in Switzerland (so very strong privacy laws). They have been audited before. There's a free tier (no bandwidth caps) along with multiple paid tiers for higher speeds, servers etc. And of course, since they're not for profit they don't sell your data. Them, along with PIA, are the only VPN providers I recommend.

I do have a specific reason, mostly because of downloading plus I am tire of seeing adds from shops that I go to and I understand VPNs are supposed to help with that. How are they less secure?

If you don't want to your ISP to see downloads, that's valid. If this is for your phone, unless you turn off location you'll still get ads for it. This is because most of the time google and other ad providers (facebook for example) will use location data, as it's far more accurate than an IP address.

As for it being less secure, most websites will be able to tell if an IP address is coming from a VPN. This makes it easier to track you. If you're not worried about being tracked going around the internet, you don't need to worry about that.

So if you're just worried about not wanting your ISP or network admin (for school or work) seeing what your downloading, go for it. If that isn't the case and you think that you'll be more safer, there's better ways of going about it

Thanks for the info. I went with SurfShark since they allow unlimited device connection and at a cheaper price.

But for ads, you're gonna still get ads, if you're browser have cookies, they gonna still use that to serve ads related to your info.

If they use location based ads, then you're gonna get ads from the vpn server you log in to, say germany, yuo're gonna get german ads.

VPN won't prevent you getting ads, that's not what it does, if you don't wanna get ads, then get a free ad blocker.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I have by far used Express / Nord and currently using Ivacy. All three are good but Ivacy is much faster than others. I have got a 50MB connection and with others VPN I saw reduction till 25-35 MB, but with Ivacy I only saw reduction of not more than 5 MB. So, for $1.16/month, it's pretty fast and secure for sure.
