The user experience with Synology devices is second to none. Setup is a breeze and everything just works plus DSM is very nice to use as a UI.

Can't say I've ever used the WD My Cloud units but having a quick look on Amazon (I looked at 8TB for both) the Synology has a quad core CPU @ 1.4Ghz and comes with 4GB of RAM while the WD has a dual core @ 1.3Ghz and only 1GB of RAM. The Synology was £80 more expensive. Also the WD seems to have considerably more bad reviews on Amazon than the Synology with people saying its a slow unit, the UI crashes a lot and transfer speeds are not what they should be (of course this could be user error or slow networks).

Personally I'd pay the little extra and get the Synology (for full transparency I do have a Synology already).

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I second this. Go wit the Synology. I had owned both and it really is no comparison. The WD units are slow, the web interface likes to free, the units random restart and/or lose connectivity, and in my experience they all use much cheaper 5400rpm drives.
