I'd say it's fine enough. 

With advice from forum members, I've picked out the parts for my neighbour's son's system build with his budget. 

Games for him : Fall guys and Rocket League.

I don't think it's overkill for child nowadays, it's basically good enough for little future-proofing. At 2005 I did kind of have good-on-the-time PC with Pentium 4, single core, 3.0GHz, and with a GeForce MX 4000 128 MB, 80 GB SATA drive, and 256 MB or 512 MB (forgot exactly how much) of RAM. Runs GTA series (I play a lot of San Andreas and Vice City) and NFS Underworld 2 pretty darn nicely that it don't even care of any graphics settings I gave.

 

Different generation but basically nearly the same price and performance depends of the generation itself.

Humor me, as you should do.
