Does my MOBO support NVMe over PCIe?

Snappy_Darko

Hi,

Im a noob and cant work out whether my X99 motherboard will support an extra NVMe M.2 drive running through a PCIe adapter like this .. and if does support it, does it need to go into a specific PCIe slot?

here's the storage spec of my mobo:

Intel® X99 chipset : *3
1 x SATA Express port, gray, , Compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports
1 x M.2 x4 Socket 3, gray, , with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE mode)
8 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray, *4
Intel® Rapid Storage Technology supports*5
ASMedia® SATA Express controller : *6
1 x SATA Express port, gray, , Compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports
ASMedia® SATA 6Gb/s controller :
2 x eSATA 6Gb/s port(s), Compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports

*3 Intel® X99 Express Chipset with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and Intel Rapid Storage Technology 13 support
*4 8 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports* (4 x gray from controller 1, 4 x black from controller 2)
*5 These functions will work depending on the CPU installed
*6 These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported

1 x M.2 x4 Socket 3, gray, , with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE mode). NVMe is a protocol that runs on PCIe.

Hi, thanks for getting back. The socket they refer to I think is labelled number 1 here, i was wondering if using this device would work in any of the PCIe slots labelled 2-8? - and if so, which one?

In theory, yes. PCIe is PCIe, and Asus has announced support for all X99 boards. Whether it's bootable or not may be different (you might only be able to boot off of the included M.2 header), but you should be able to access it.

I do not need to boot off of it, just use it as storage.  Will it matter which PCIe slot i use?

I don't think so...

It can depending on what other cards you have in the system and in what slots. Some slots often get downgraded or disabled if others are populated, check mobo manual.
