I have this old HDD which is infected with a virus. The antivirus on my older PC couldn't clean the infected files. It suggested me to delete all those photos and files. But recently I got a new PC with a different antivirus. I just want to try and clean the files with new antivirus. What I want to know is when does the virus get transferred to the newer drive. Is it when I plug in  the older drive to a SATA port and run it? Is it when I open file explorer and just view the files or is it when I run the infected files? But I obviously know that viruses get transferred when I copy the files to the newer drive.

A virus jumping ship could theoretically happen even if you just plug in the SATA drive to the PC. Here's what I'd do, clean/fresh install Windows to your new PC. Don't set anything up except for your antivirus. Then plug the infected drive into the PC and have the A/V software try and kill the virus(s). Then you can go from there and ensure it's really gone from everywhere and finally continue setting up your new PC.

Thanks for your advice but the problem is that I have been using the PC for almost 4 months now and I don't have time to install a fresh copy of Windows and set up my PC due to the online classes.
I'll see if I can make some time in the future and follow these steps.
