Hello everyone, I wanted to upgrade my rig. Changed out CPU and PSU. Then suddenly pc doesn't recognize any storage devices anymore (1 Boot SSD and 2 HDD). All SATA. Tried all ports, changed both power and SATA cables.

Cleared CMOS, tried different modes in BIOS. No avail.

Then I tried my old PSU and that doesn't work either. Tried to change sata to usb, doesn't work either.

The I plugged all drives with 2 different usb cables in my mother's laptop. Doesn't recognize it either.

My pc does recognize a USB device and I plugged my brothers USB only hard drive, that does seem to recognize it.

Does this mean all my hard drives are dead?

Are they 3.5" - drives? Those SATA->USB-adapters are meant for 2.5"-drives, they can't power 3.5"-drives.

The drive or the adapter? Two different things.

Both. I hear it "whizzing". Anyway the SSD is 2.5 inch as well

Then I guess your drives are dead, indeed. Did you accidentally plug e.g. a molex-cable the wrong way around? That'd send 12V to 5V-rail and could easily break drives.

No idea, I don't think so but it could be a possibility.

Yes, it is. But with not enough power if you're ONLY using those for 3.5" drives.

USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter Cable for 2.5" SSD HDD Drives: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

The 3.5" should have molex power connected on it, you can use the PSU to turn it on.

The SSD one should works, tho.

And I don't think he'd be do it wrong way around, molex connectors have it's own side, except if there's something wrong with the PSU.

Humor me, as you should do.

It's actually pretty easy to plug them the wrong way around. They won't lock properly, but they can still make a connection and ruin your day.

So I think I have indeed managed to destroy all of my drives. Just plugged in a spare HDD through SATA and it works fine. That's a shame but nonetheless I can move on. I can't think of a moment where I put power on with the wrong cables but who knows.

Welp I usually can't get it in if I got it on the wrong side. I ever killed a 3.5" 250 GB drive because I stupidly re-wire on the wrong one wire. 5V and 12V rails got connected and *poof* on the power supply and the drive that aren't even spinning.

But, welp, it might be on OP, unluckily.

Humor me, as you should do.

I don't really have any important files so that's alright. Just have to install everything all over again which is annoying. But that's life.

Is there a way to revive an SSD? It mean its not mechanical. I don't care about  the HDD's much they are old and slow anyway

Well, unfortunately, entirely of SSDs are electrical devices, and means more susceptible from electrical damage, afaik.

If even you can revive one, I don't think you could use it long-term as the NAND memory or the controller potentially would be permanently damaged anyway.

But if it's still on warranty, you probably can ask for RMA if possible, I dunno if they accept warranties if the fault is on yourself (welp you basically killed 3 drives in one shot), but it doesn't hurt to try anyway.

Humor me, as you should do.

I got it secondhand, so no warranties. But that's alright, part of the risk of buying secondhand. Great deals, but sometimes you have bad luck. I'll get a new one now.

Welp, get a new one then. Actually it would be fine to use secondhand as long as it's not used brutally (you can always check the drive SMART status, it got the amount of writes performed). But still, rather to get the new one for the warranty.

Samsung/Crucial/Adata made the good one afaik, check for the SSD tier list thread on the forum for at least a good reference. But it wouldn't hurt to get the budget one (welp I got one on Tier E here unfortunately) if it restraints enough.

Humor me, as you should do.
