Cheapest gpu (in £) that'll run nms

Hi what is the cheapest gpu in £ that can run no man's sky (720p-1080p range ) apparently the gtx 480 will run the game but not in the latest patches (like origins ) the card is only £20 in the UK used store Cex any from their will be best I just don't know what to look for because if you search cheapest card for nms you get the answer gtx 1060 but their not that cheap

I'd save up to get something better, there's no point wasting money on an ancient GPU that won't run a lot of modern games (2010 onwards).

It's literally just for no man's sky I have a Vega 64 it's for my grandad who just loves space and adventure games but he carnt play because it runs at 0.5fpz to 2fps

What are the rest of the specs of the PC?

Look for a used GTX 970 or RX 470/480/570/580, you can usually find them under $100 online. The real deals are going to be local sales, check your local used classifieds for sure.

The card specifically needs Vulkan support, so GTX 700 or newer. I had a R9 280 which prompted my upgrade to a GTX 1080, you definitely don't want any GCN 1 cards even if they're cheap. Maybe GCN2/3 cards might have better performance but usually you're within $20 of Polaris which was really popular and has decent driver support.

It's got a r5 2609 so I carnt do any of them without insane bottleneck

I have a X5675 with a GTX1080, I bottleneck the crap out of the GTX1080 in a decent few games.

 

All of those cards would be fine. Maybe consider something in the Ivy Bridge family too, there's some great price to performance skus on LGA2011.

Bottlenecking doesn't mean it won't work, it just means you won't get maximum performance.

It's literally 2.4ghz if it dosent cause a bottleneck I'm changing out my r5 2600x for one

If lesser cards won't work, you won't have much of a choice.

No it's just that I don't want to drop £100 or some insane price on a gpu for it to not reach max performance

Yeah that's not how that works. With that mindset everything but a 10900k is a bottleneck, period.

 

Unless you're getting 100% full utilization which is what the bottleneck people are concerned with actually is, your performance is simply just going to scale to the performance of your parts. If your CPU performs 30% slower in games than the new 106969k, it doesn't matter if you stick a RTX 3090 in there, you're just going to get roughly 30% less performance than the new cpu provided you don't hit an actual utilization bottleneck. Until you hit that point where the CPU physically can't push the frames fast enough, you're fine. That point doesn't have to be full utilization either. Even then you can just increase your resolution to 1440p/4K or simply limit your FPS to 60fps and/or use vsync or something to prevent it hitting a bottleneck at a much higher fps.

 

4c/4t is a bottleneck in newer games, NMS however is still fairly singlethreaded so I wouldn't worry about it although finding like a 6c/12t Xeon would be a worthwhile upgrade as well. The vulkan update doubled my FPS though and really improved the multithreading.

 

Also polaris cards aren't decent they are like 5 year old $200 gpus lol.

So what do you reckon I should look at the gtx 480, any Radeon or hd series cards

The GTX 570 I gave to a buddy won't run NMS, it doesn't support Vulkan.

 

The GTX 480 won't either, Fermi is probably most useful as a folding@home space heater until it eventually cooks the GPU and breaks the solder joints or whatever dies on high power cards like that. Maybe sell it to someone for $20 that wants to try to trip breakers with a quad sli setup or something silly. Otherwise, it'll play pre-2010 games really well I guess.

 

You need a card with Vulkan support at the minimum for NMS, Polaris/GTX 970's have been the best bang for your buck around $80-100 where cards which have about half the performance such as HD7950's and other sub 4GB cards run in the $50-75 price range where the extra $20 literally gets you twice as fast of a card that supports more modern codecs, features and things which will make it far more useful in 5 years instead of something that's already not compatible with many games from the last few years.

 

If you'd really like me to, I'll clock my X5675 all the way down to 2.4ghz, disable hyperthreading and play NMS in 1080p/1440p on a GTX 1080 and see what happens later tonight possibly. It's Westmere on 32nm, so it'll probably be a slight bit slower than 32nm Sandy Bridge. I might be able to set the process to 4 cores in windows too. Changing the resolution up and down will give an idea of where any CPU bottleneck might be if there is one.
