Upgrade dilemma, not sure what to upgrade for 1440p.

deadqoop

Budget (including currency): $1800 CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Triple A games mostly, and SOME workstation stuff for coding and whatnot.

Other details: This is my current parts list: I got this as a hand-me down (I honestly don't know much about PCs, just been upgrading the GPU since that seemed like the best idea). My main plan is to game comfortably at 1440p/144hz, but recently, I've been noticing that I am getting A LOT of stutters at 1080p in most single player games and just inconsistent frames, which makes some games basically unplayable. So I am not sure how well this system is gonna hold up for 1440p, especially for Cyberpunk.

I know the build looks good, but it definitely doesn't feel like its performing how it should be, which is weird.

My plan was to go with this build, just to have a more recent build that would be capable of 1440p/144hz:

So, my main dilemma is basically, is it worth upgrading the 5960x if I am planning to game at 1440p/144hz?

I've been thinking of maybe just scrapping the idea and trying to get a 3080 and upgrade just the GPU while also buying the 1440p monitor, which would amount to around the same price as me upgrading the entire system without a 3080.

So my main question I guess, how much performance increase would I be expecting if I changed platforms to AMD with the future build I posted at 1440p? And if it's not worth it, should I just upgrade to a 3080 and the 1440p monitor by themselves.

Sorry for the dumb question, I am just stuck on which option to take since this is technically going to be my first time building a brand new PC on my own haha. But I appreciate any answers!

I certainly wouldn't get a 3700x, the 4700x is just around the corner. Why do you want a 500GB NVME drive? I wouldn't bother unless you're getting at least a 1TB.

I'd also wait for Black Friday. You'll be able to save a ton on the monitor.

zen 3 announces on the 8th, i would wait and see what the 5700x and 5600 cpus look like.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Oh yeah, sorry I should have mentioned that I put the 3700x as more of a placeholder for now, I'll definitely wait for the announcement to see what the new CPUs will be like.

Okay, I'll wait for Black Friday to get the monitor!

And I just wanted the NVME just as extra storage for a few games while also keeping the other 500GB SSD. But I'll see if I can bump it up to 1tb

If you wait until Black Friday it'll be easy. I wouldn't bother with an NVME drive unless it's the same price as a SATA one for games, there's virtually no difference.

Okay, I'll just stick with SATA then for games. I heard NVMEs were super super fast so I thought it might benefit me haha.

diminishing returns, and lack of developer support in games. games just dont utilize the extra resources yet. they may eventually but we dont know when and to what extent. its nice having no cables for drives though

the changes id make if i were you

assuming zen 3 was cancelled tomorrow lol, this would be the best bang for your buck. that being said zen 3 is probably gonna kick ass so id personally go ahead and get everything set up for a zen 3 cpu and just use a 3600 as a placeholder

Yeah, not really. They benchmark high in synthetic workloads but for gaming I wouldn't even bother. Sometimes they're the same price or lower though, and if that's the case then might as well save the 0.5 seconds of loading 😛

technically yes but a lot of boards these days dont support b+m key drives (sata m.2), only m key which is nvme. and those are usually close in price as a result of the form factor

And okay, yeah fair enough about the drive thing!
