Best Free Screen Recording Utilities/Programs

Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

OBS - OpenbroadcastSoftware @Geekazoid

https://obsproject.com/download

Set scene name, Set Monitor as capture, Set Hotkey for on/off

Bench your HDD you record to. Example: If your Writing speed = 105-122Mb/s (7200rpm Mechanical drives usual bench scores)

50-100mbps (50000+ Kbit/s) or higher bitrates are good for 1080p capture, find your own sweet spot for quality.

Google OBS settings for finetuning to your needs.

Very easy to use with a hotkey like all the other programs, that are not free, OBS is.

Hi guys,

So I'm thinking about commencing Sony Vegas Pro tutorials on my YouTube channel and So I'm looking for the best free screen recording utilities/programs that will enable me to record these tutorials.

What I would like is the ability to choose the frame rate at which I can record so that the screen recording is quite smooth. It would also be great if it recorded to an MP4 Codec, however this is not necessary as I can just use Handbrake to convert the screen caps to MP4.

Thanks in advance for your help guys. Tis much appreciated. :D

Okay Beebs, I get your flammin' point. Just my finances are a tad tight at the moment. So I just wanted some good free screen recording utilities with the intent on getting a paid one later down the road. So, got any good free alternatives?

Erm.....no! *looks confused*.

Nah mate, I's just being kidding. The "flammin" was more to emphasise that I got your logic but proceeded to explain my reasons for a free screen cap utility/program.

but yeah camstudio is popular, I haven't used it but a lot of YouTubers do.

Okay, well I'll look into it at least. Thanks! :D

BTW: It takes more than that to get me upset. :D

Okay, thanks for that. Tis very much appreciated.

Is recording going to be a problem with my PC though?

These are my basic specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 w/1GB DDR3

HDD: Samsung 500GB 7200RPM (75MB/s)

Hardware should be acceptable for recording, just not gameplay recording (playing games and encoding video takes a serious hit on performance). But, since it's going to be for tutorials, then that shouldn't be a concern.

^This. @Geekazoid

While most recording programs use Mbps for bitrates I think OBS uses Kbps so below I added the brackets.

Also did you get what I meant about your 75Mbps writing ability being the maximum obviously that you can set the bitrate to.

I'd aim for 35Mbps (35000)for desktop capture @ 30-60fps (depending how smooth you want it to be)

& going higher to 60mbps (60000) if the text doesn't look right or good enough to you personally.

I'm sure the finetuning process you'll find what you need to get good quality.

Hmm yep I believe so. I do a decent amount of video editing and so I know a fair bit about bitrates. Thanks for your help mate! I very much appreciate it. Maybe when I do my first tutorial I'll mention you and a few others here who helped me in my credits.

Once again, without sounding like a broken record :P, thanks. :D

Thx for thx, the reason I went into more details is you never know the experience of the user in question until they state it themselves.
