Hi LTT community,

I was just wondering if it would be possible to put one 500gb and another 1tb in raid 0. Both of these drives are Western Digital Black internal drives, I'm worried that due to their difference in hard disk space, it may not be able to have a raid 0 config. , also, I was wondering what would happen to all the data on my current 500gb one (almost full). Would the Raid 0 config affect it once I execute the change through the bios?

Thanks,

James

would it be possible to partition the 1tb drive into 2 500gb drives? doing this thus running a different raid for speed and reliability?

No it wouldnt.

The slower drive will reduce the overall performance, but the faster drive would still perform at its maximum rate.

RAID arrays run like this:

In your particular situation you have a 500GB drive an a 1000GB drive (terabyte drive.) Your RAID controller will use the second drive as 500GB because what it does is it does 500 * 2 to make 1TB. So instead of 1.5 TB of storage you will just have 1TB of storage because it multiplies s * d, with s=space of first drive and d=number of drives.

I hope this helped and happy RAIDing!  ;)

K my mistake :)

One more thought. Not sure if feasible. You could format the tb drive into 2x500,then raid the partitions.

Or just make a jbod...
