Definetely get an adapter. Also, why do you have a 290 and a VGA monitor?

I hope you are thinking of upgrading that monitor... and what @CoolBeans said is what you need.

No, you need an active adapter. It doesn't support DVI-i as it only has DVI-D which a normal VGA adaptor will not work over.

AMD Ryzen 5900x, Nvidia RTX 3080 (MSI Gaming X-trio), ASrock X570 Extreme4, 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB @ 3200mhz CL16, Corsair MP600 1TB, Intel 660P 1TB, Corsair HX1000, Corsair 680x, Corsair H100i Platinum

No you don't

Yes you do. The 290(x) only has DVI-D and I quote "A passive DVI-to-VGA adapter. This adapter will NOT work with a DVI-D output. It requires a DVI-I or DVI-A output to get the analog signal to a VGA input (even if the adapter looks like a DVI-D)."

If you find an active DVI to VGA adaptor then you can.

290 is still ridiculous overkill for 1080p

The first part was still correct I added more information, you are still wrong. >> "No, you need an active adapter." Before edit. Since he had been told to just buy an adapter he'd have gone and bought a passive one which wouldn't have worked. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes I was providing more information.
