rebuild of sear console Stereo

I inherited my grandparents console stereo from the early 70s, for the most part everything works on it but the cabinet is in bad shape so since i have to rebuild the cabinet, i think it would be a good time to upgrade/ modernize some of the tech, i love the sound of the old speakers and dont really want to change those out, i would take any tips, or suggestions all you guys can think of
