With all the new fun gaming things coming out I realised the are all pointless to me as my TV (which everything console / PC is connected to) isn't up to scratch (1080p 60htz). I thought its about time I upgraded and having seen the overview of LTT of LGs cx range I thought I'd look into that.

I see there are few posts around it not support g-sync when the settings are maxed 4k, UHD, 120hz etc. can anyone confirm this is the case? There are plenty of people saying its not possible and then a few people saying its caused by the bandwidth limitations of people not using hdmi 2.1 video cards. I thought you people could give me a straight answer?

My plan is TV first (as my current TV is broken) then try and pick up PC parts on black Friday (rtx 3080 🧐, + new MB and CPU)

I have the older LG B9, and believe it is essentially the same as the CX in this area.

The TV only has HDMI inputs. If you use a Turing (20 series) GPU, that can only output HDMI 2.0 which can work up to 1440p 120 Hz, or 4k 60 Hz. Some have reported being able to "overclock" it, but I didn't have any luck on mine.

With an Ampere card (30 series), when you can eventually get one, it supports HDMI 2.1 which the TV does also. This will enable 4k 120 Hz.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think G-sync doesn't work between these TVs and older generation GPUs before Turing.

I intend to get an Ampere card as soon as practical, can confirm everything works as it should then. The limit is due to the GPUs before Ampere not supporting a new enough version of HDMI.

Oh, the other possible weakness of the LG OLEDs is that the HDR capability is not the best. If HDR is a priority then other (not OLED) choices can be better.

So long as ur running a one of the new Cards, be it a 3070, 3080, 3090 or one of AMDs upcoming cards, all which should have HDMI 2.1 you can run the Display at 4k 120hz 444 chroma, with HDR, BFI, and VRR.

ofc thats no guarantee all games will hit 120fps, the 3080 for example has shown that while it certainly a 4k 60hz capable cards, it not 4k 120hz capable in all games when running max settings (excluding RT)

Yeah, but its more future proofing than anything else. I'd expect the TV to last a couple of generations of graphics cards. The TV that broke is 10 years old. I probably upgrade the GPU every 3 years

Careful about ur expectations.

LCDs are far more durable than OLEDs, and it will really depend on how u treat an OLED and how many hours per year u put into it as to how long it lasts.

If u play games with subtle UI's, and vary your content, u can put 10,000 hours in and be fine.

Week 102 (20/7 COD:WW2, 14,280 hours)

If u play games LIke Fifa or Fortnite all the time with its very right UI's, ull start seeing minor (as in only noticeable on color slides) degradation as early as 1000 hours (of only that game, no other content).

Week 16 (20/7 Fifa 18, 2240 hours)

NOTE : these test were done with the older generation C7 OLEDs, playing the same content over and over for 20 hours a day every day) newer 9 and X generation models are more durable, but still susceptible.
