Hello everyone

I've got this computer I made over 5 years ago that has, and still is, serving me very well. Here are the important specs:
 - i7 5820k @ 4.4Ghz
 - 32GB DDR4
 - GTX 970
 - 2x 1440p monitors

Since I've recently started playing warzone with some friends I've been looking at upgrading the graphics card, but I'm not sure what to get.
I haven't been keeping on top of hardware and have little idea how this stacks up to current hardware.
I read about the new 3080, and 3070 being better than 2080ti, but perhaps all of those are overkill for my old system?

This is where you come in.
Which graphics card should I be looking out for, are there any used bargains that I can look for rather than new?
Would I be better off buying/building a new computer or upgrading more components than just the graphics card?

I'm on a significantly tighter budget now, than when I built my computer, and spending much more than 1000$ US is out of the question.

Looking forward to your feedback!

a gpu upgrade would be fine, you won't get the best performance out of the gpu, but you should see a decent performance uplift from what that 970 can put out. A 3080 (if you can get one during a restock, GamersNexus sources say to expect frequent resupplies) or a 3070 when they become available would be fine options with a performance boost waiting for when you upgrade the cpu/mobo

Honestly, wait for the RTX 3070, which should be around 520 USD for the FE version if you want and RTX card. Just to play at higher FPS right away a RTX 2060 super is still a pretty good deal and will be a huge upgrade compared to your 970. This leaves room for a future system upgrade consisting of cpu, memory and motherboard, should you feel the need for it. You can get 2060 super cards at around 350 USD at the moment.

Are you saying that I would see similar performance with either GPU, because of CPU or other system limitations?

Is there an FPS/$ advantage to going with a 2060s? without knowing the numbers, a generation older and a step down from 3070 at 70% of the cost sounds like it could be a worse deal overall?

No. Saying either gpu won't deliver the absolute most fps they can with that cpu. I would still expect a performance difference between them, especially in less cpu demanding situations.
