swapped some ram on reddit and i've ended up with two kits of 2x8gb 3000c15 vengeance rgb non-pro dimms. one set is v4.31, which should be confirmed b die, and the other is v5.30, which is speculated to be hynix afr. do we know much about afr? what are the chances that these will overclock together well? with shit binned b die kits is it worth it to get a matching v4.31 kit or would that not oc well? mostly just looking to get 3600c18 or so for my buddy's ryzen system

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

Hynix AFR is a really common high-ish frequency die on and below 3200MHz CL16. They can reach high frequencies like 4000MHz if you dont mind garbage timings, but with timings in check they pretty much never go past 3466MHz. this is very different from Samsung B-die that we usually know, but I'm not confident that your "B-die kit" is going to be good anyway so just try it.

you won't be pushing them super hard with 3600 C18 so they should be alright, I expect you to only hit 3200 though but that's just from my bad luck with memory and ryzen so far.

my last b die kit would do 3800c19 with extra voltage, was 2x16gb so i wasnt expecting much from it.

3200c16 would be pretty decent, assuming the auto timings arent shit. 

 

i forgot i was gonna put these on a b450m pro4 so 3200c16 should be as much as i should expect lol. does that board handle basic overclocking well? any difficulties i should expect with 4x8gb? and whats a safe voltage to push with the hynix afr dimms?

3200C16 is what I would expect, hopefully you can get higher. I've just had horrible luck with sticks in my past, ever since the X58 days i've had everything from 1866mhz stuck at 1600 before RMAing to get them working all the way up to 4000MHZ stuck at 3200MHZ on my Ryzen 5 2600 rig, followed all the guilds, researched and just bad luck. second round and only once third round sticks have always been great and pushed even higher than expected. 

 

see how far you can go with auto voltage, the newer sticks are surprisingly easy to overclock without voltage changes.

well it was a 3200c16 kit which shoudlnt really be anything fancy in the first place lol. board was a z390 maximus hero and cpu was a 9700k and 9900k. thast board didnt wanna go over 3800mhz with any of the kits i had, including my current kit. my real b die kit in my sig is doing pretty decent rn, 2x16gb at 3600c14 on an x570-e with a 3600.

to be fair 3200mhz was kinda the max you could get with zen+ right? and these arent very new dimms, from 2016 or 2017 i think. vengeance rgb non pro which is a bit old now

I meant newer sticks as in most ddr4 compared to ddr2 and 3 days where we had to push 1.8v+ to get stable on higher clocks

Now it's all 1.2v,1.4v ish and it's happy all the way up in clocks.

ah ok. i think a lot of ICs on cheaper dimms wont budge from xmp no matter how much voltage you give em but i havent been messing with enough samples to say for certain
