Platform Upgrade.

Planning to upgrade my intel 6500 / motherboard / ram. I currently have a 1080ti and would like to transition into gaming at a higher spec as my CPU is a heavy bottleneck.

I've put off upgrading due to BIOS updates possibly, and not knowing what software steps I need for this upgrade? do i need fresh windows? Can i uninstall and reinstall drivers into my SSD? will I need a new windows10 key?

A few things I've considered above, but what does a platform upgrade actually require me to do. thanks.

In your case replace everything but the case, and maybe the PSU depending on capacity type, and age.  Can you wait?  This is still a fairly bad time to upgrade. You will not need an new win10 key, and your SSD(s) will still be useful.  You may or may not need an nvme of unknown type for fastest gaming speeds.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I'm just wanting to upgrade my CPU / mobo / ram to better fit my 1080ti and to be a more balanced system when I eventually upgrade my GPU. I am just worried about compatibility, what happens if I just switch my cpu/mobo/ram and boot my pc?

I'd advise a fresh reinstall of Windows. Just write down the key that you're currently using and enter it during the reinstallation process.

Laptop :

Thinkpad X230 | i5 3320M | 8 GB DDR3 | V-Gen 128 GB SSD |

I don't have a key, apparently whoever I bought the PC from obviously cracked it I am guessing. So I'll just have to buy windows, no escaping it?
