So,

I'm back with more hardware questions. I'm upgrading my mobo to be ready for Ampere GPU's. My Dad is gonna buy my current mobo and GPU which works perfectly for him so I was wondering what are the main differences between MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS and the ROG Strix X570-F. The only really differences I could find are the MSI doesn't support SLI (which ampere doesn't do anyway (unless you go 3090)) and some RAM speeds, but since I already have RAM and mine is supported by the MSI board, is there any reason to go for the ASUS one (or any more expensive mobo for that matter)?

What current board do you have? because gen 4 is not necessary to rum ampere cards, pcie is backwars compatible meaning it will just run at gen 3/2/1 assuming you don't have a board, and gen 3 x16 is still enough bandwidth for ampere for the most part, but wait and check, but it shouldn't be a problem but to answer your question.

Well, people will say get what you exactly need, anyway.

ASUS got more SATA slots, but I doubt you'll need it anyway. ASUS got better integrated audio either, I think. If you plan to get SLI later on your life, it might be beneficial.

Humor me, as you should do.

I've got the ROG Strix X-470-F which is why I suggested that and as my Dad is getting an upgrade anyway it makes sense for me to get one that gives me breathing room with Ampere, from what I have read. I can make it compatible with PCIe4 with a firmware upgrade, but you just don't have access to the full performance

Yeah I don't really need the SATA slots as I'm not running a server with it :') Integrated audio isn't really a deal breaker for me as, while I appreciate the difference, I'm not a giga audiophile. And as I said because the 3080 (the card I'm planning to get after looking at reviews) doesn't support SLI. Not having SLI really means nothing to me

No, pcie is backward compatible out of the box and as i said, gen 3 x16 should be enough bandwidth for ampere cards, but wait and check reviews, but for the most part it should be fine.

you don't need a new board.

I have been misinformed then. Yeah what I read was needing a firmware update to get it to run. As long as there is enough bandwidth I should be gucci, however as someone in this house is getting a new mobo, its just out there to explore the options.

So my Dad is upgrading to Ryzen from a Phenom II I think he's running. Obviously to do that he needs a motherboard upgrade. We were thinking he could use mine and I could upgrade to one that natively supports PCIe4 given a motherboard has to be bought either way.

You can keep your board.

as for your dad, what are they powering and budget and location?

so a b550 would do for him.

Again budget?

Either way though so name some decent boards:

B550: aorus pro, strix f, tomahawk, mortar, a pro, steel legend.

X570: tomahawk, tuf, aorus elite if you can't find either of the tuf or the tomahawk.

I think around £200, we have a board decided and I think it's the ROG B550 board IIRC. This was a if I was getting one what did I need for Ampere, we know what we need for my Dad
