Games freeze every few minutes for 5 to 10 seconds.

Samurai_147

So I've recently upgraded my pc with a new gpu and its running good for not so graphic intense games but when I play GTA 5 or any other graphic intense games the game just freezes for 5 to 10 seconds before going back to normal. It happens every 5 to 10 minutes. In hitman 2 (2018) it happens every 15 minutes or so. I don't know if its a gpu problem because before the gpu these games were not running good anyways. So is there a solution to this problem?

Specs:

i3 7100 3.9 ghz

Rx 570 4gb

8 gb ddr4 2400mhz

1tb WD HDD

what's the disk usage like during these stutters? monitor using task manager

it could also be a cpu issue since you're only using a dual core

What are your temperatures?

You didn't list the psu in detail (model number)

Did you remove the integrated gpu driver? If not DDU all graphics drivers and reinstall.

I didn't measure the cpu temp but gpu stays below 60 when it first freezes it doesn't even get teh time to warm up the first freeze is under 5 to 10 min. The PSU is Antec NeoEco 550M (new version with flat black cables. I just installed the new drivers with that autodetect software I found on AMD page when browsing for drivers I didn't uninstall the old drivers.

There are no stutters, the whole game just freezes for 5 to 10 sec and then it goes back to running smoothly.

that's what i call a "stutter" but i guess freeze is a good description

how's the disk usage like? RAM usage?

im suspecting you're hitting pagefile when using near 85% of your RAM, and that poor HDD is working hard, too hard that it suffers when trying to load game assets and freeze. had that happen to me once.

yeah ram is around 6.5 gigs when playing but it stays like that from the beginning like it doesn't shoot up when the game freezes.

Isn't a quote not needed when posting your first reply towards op? They get notified the same way don't they? I do that so it doesn't start cluttering up the topic needlessly.

Also on the pc I do believe you are right about the pagefile being hammered. Op could try lowering the settings to where they were when they did not have the gpu and see what that gives. With an fps cap of course.

oh, that msg wasnt towards you, i mentioned you because he replied to you but didnt quote you lol

my bad

author normally follows the topic (unless they turned it off manually) so you dont have to quote/mention them when replying, but it helps to point out which part you're replying to anyways.

but does disk usage shoot up? 6.5GB out of 8GB is when it starts page filing

I'll measure it the next time I play

@Moonzy So here's what happened when I played GTA 5 again. I opened task manager beside the game and monitored the game time in radeon software. If I take out about 3 minutes for loading the game, it ran smoothly for around 7 minutes then it froze for 5-10 sec (when the game froze radeon software showed about 10 minutes.) in those 5-10 seconds disk usage went from 20 30 to 99 and then 100. After 5-10 seconds the game became normal but the disk stayed at 100 for another 2 minutes then it came back to 20 30.Both the CPU and GPU were below 60C. The next freeze happened EXACTLY after 20 minutes and the same thing happened with the disk.

When the first freeze happened I was just walking and running in the same spot so the game wasn't loading that many assets. After that I started driving very fast but the game ran smoothly without any lag and when the game froze again after 20 min I was driving very slowly. And if loading assets was the problem why does hitman 2 freeze when I am inside a house?

I'm not game dev, but running out of RAM is not a good thing and can cause issues like that like I've mentioned

I played Far Cry 4 today and it the ram usage was only 4 gigs but it still froze every 5-10 mins for 5-10 secs.

hmm... that dual core might not be good enough now?

have you tried DDU-ing and reinstalling your GPU driver?

Is the CPU usage pinned 100%?

No in GTA 5 its at 70 to 80 but in AC Unity its always 98 99 sometimes 100. In Far Cry 4 also its 60 to 80

was the RAM usage total 4GB or only the game alone is 4GB?

because idle system is already 3GB and i dont think farcry only uses 1gb RAM

The whole system was using 4.5 when it first froze that was after 5-10 min of playing. It does climb upto 5.5 after some time

that's odd
