AMD Or Intell?

4 members have voted

  1. 1. Which CPU do you recommend?

    • AMD RYZEN 9 3950X - 3,5GHz
    • Intel Core i9 10900K - 3,7Ghz.

Hi peeps!

I am new to pc building. I have been using a old prebuild for over 20 years, and I wanne upgrade and go big. (hey, if you have had a pc for 20 years, you are allowed too!) I inherited this pc from my dad, and he has served me well. It has no GPU and that's a bottleneck as it comes to gaming. With my new self-build I wanne game, stream and write (for I am a professional fiction writer)
I am gonna top CPU, for the "because I am allowing myself too" reason. However, I am in doubt for going with the

AMD RYZEN 9 3950X - 3,5GHz or  Intel Core i9 10900K - 3,7Ghz.

Maybe it is a stupid question, because a lot communities made fun of the question. Unfortunately, they didn't provide an answer. I get that for veterans the question might be silly, but I am new, so I hope you guys can help me out without making me feel stupid? :P

Thanks in advance!

Budget is around 3000 euro's for the full build. Workload I find difficult to say because with the old one I simply could not game, but let's say that it should be able to run the newest games with relative ease, and secure me for the forseeable future. Also, being able to stream with it is a must. 😉

Yeah, you're in a spot there.

I guess if you want to game now, you don't have much of a choice. Were I you, I wouldn't spend a large 3000eu budget on stuff right now since everything is basically EOL. I'd just get whatever is inexpensive at the moment but still competent, and then reassess when you no longer can play games at your desired level anymore.

I should have joined earlier! You guys actually answered the question. But for educational purposes: which of the two would you have picked? (I'll wait anyway now!)

depends, theyre both very good. if you ever wanted to do any video editing, rendering, 3d modeling, any sort of compute work at all, the 3950x or 3900x would be the choice. for strictly gaming the 10900k is better by a few percent. if this were a year ago when new stuff wasnt on the horizon id get a 3900x/3950x mostly for the better platform (pcie 4.0 and zen 3 as an upgrade path)

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (placeholder)

GPU: Gigabyte 980ti Xtreme (also placeholder), deshroud w/ generic 1200rpm 120mm fans x2, stock bios 130% power, no voltage offset: +70 core +400 mem

Memory: 2x16gb GSkill Trident Z RGB 3600C16, 14-15-30-288@1.45v

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S w/ white chromax bling
OS Drive: Samsung PM981 1tb (OEM 970 Evo)

Storage Drive: XPG SX8200 Pro 2tb

Backup Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB

PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 750W w/ black/white Cablemod extensions
Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

When it comes to gaming? 10900k is technically better.

if it's a workload that can scale up to 16 cores, the 3950x is better, and in fact, generally it's better for multi threaded workloads.

if i were you id go ahead and start getting some good parts together as sales occur sporadically. i buy used a lot but if you prefer new then id watch /r/buildapcsales on reddit for good deals on stuff like SSDs, monitors, that sorta thing. as you can see from my signature i've got a whole build with some placeholders which has costed me around 1000 bucks in total. once i can get my hands on a good zen 3 and a strong gpu then ill be able to flip the 3600/980ti for more than what i paid for em :)

im fine "gambling" on zen 3 bc zen 2 is already great and id be fine with a 3600/3700x for my games/workloads, so ive just set up a good upgrade path for myself. if zen 3 got snapped out of existence i'd maybe swap the 3600 for a 3700x/3900x and itd be a great setup. intel isnt a terrible choice but im playing at 1440p so it's mostly gpu limited, and if you wanted to go 4k its completely gpu limited. with framerates in rtx games may stay gpu limited at lower resolutions for a while longer. aside from 1080p i cant find any definitive reasons to go intel. maybe you wanna replace your heating unit in the winter with a 10900k? :P
