Just had AT&T out to my house and we are suppose to get higher speed for 10 bucks less a month. But the installer told us we are 4500ft from the box which is about max range. So he said his only option was a bonded internet? Not sure what that is but the gist of what he said might happen is that service might become more unreliable and cut out more. So we didn't have anything done and will be stuck with 20mb because I'd much rather have slower but reliable service like we already have.

I just built a new PC this summer with a Z490 Taichi MOBO. After looking at aftermarket wireless cards it looks like the MOBO already comes with top of the line wireless. So my question is will there be any benefit in drilling a hole in the wall and running an ethernet cable from the router to this PC? I know ethernet is faster and more reliable than wireless. But I don't have any problem with signal blockage for this wireless plus it's already capable of running waaaay more than 20mb. So I want to get an answer on if it's worth the hassle and wall damage to run a cable or if I won't notice any difference.

Thanks

I'd always use a cable instead of wireless if available becuase

I understand that but how can it actually be faster if this wireless isn't even remotely running at its max capabilities? I thought ethernet being faster is just in general between the two techs. As in you can get max X with ethernet but only max Y with wireless. But I'm not sure which is why I'm asking. And like I said reliability isn't an issue. As the crow flies this PC in only not even 10 ft from the router and the wall has no effect that I can see. I'm wondering about speed only.

reliability has to do with speed.

if a connection is unreliable it's speed isn't going to be consistent. Tortise and hare situation.

However it really isn't that situation as ethernet will be just as fast if not faster than the wireless anyway. Course non of that even matter as your connection is only 20mb so it's not like you're going to hit either limit

If you can get consistently close to your maximum speed on your internet connection using wireless and that is all you’re concerned about, there isn’t any need to use ethernet.

The speed and reliability of ethernet comes into play when you want sustained speeds for the majority of time (minimal interference), low latency and potentially higher inter-client transfer speeds for internal LAN traffic.

I'll just call it good then and save myself the hassle, wall damage, and cost of the cable then. Thanks guys, oh and gals apparently. :) lol How much does being a professional mean girl pay? Are you hiring? Apparently I can be whatever I feel like identifying as now days. 🤣
