RTX3000 series in Laptop, when?

Hi, as the topic stated. When could we expect the new RTX3000 series be in laptops, or they ever would?

 

Currently I'm looking at purchasing a Legion 5 4800H RTX2060 with 16GB of RAM, 144Hz 300 nitts screen, 256GB M.2 storage for about USD$1050. Would that be a sound decision to buy or should I wait a little longer for new graphic cards to be in laptops?

They likely will come to laptops, but are unleaked/unannounced. Any number someone gives you is complete speculation.

If you're happy with what you get for the money, you might as well buy now. We don't even have proper benchmarks for Ampere yet.

It'll be a while. You're only just now seeing things like the 1660 and 2060 in laptops. Also bear in mind that it won't be the same thing. It will surely be an improvement, but mobile GPUs are much less powerful than their desktop brethren, even if they share the same name.

wait at least 6 months before making any purchase.

2060 laptop was released the same time as the desktop model, around january 2019.

2080 was released september 2018.

But unlike the desktop, laptop gpu adopted slower.

It seems like quite a good deal with the Legion 5 as other RTX2060 laptops from where I live cost north of USD$1200.  I am planning to upgrade my laptop and replace it with my current desktop altogether (x4 955BE with GTX750Ti). 

 

I am aware of the performance difference between a desktop and laptop GPUs, but it seems that the GTX3000 series represents a huge improvement over the 2000 series as well (from what Nvidia is saying). Best guess, there might be at least a six months wait until possibly seeing the GTX3060 desktop variant being released and announced on laptops?

6 months is very optimistic, there should be very limited options to choose, plus there might be a limited supply.

Personally I suspect the performance difference for laptops will be not as big, do to the increased power utilization in Ampere. At the same power levels, the gains will be less substantial.

It's also yet to be seen how these GPU's perform in non-RTX loads, I suspect the figures given take full advantage of a next-generation RTX compute unit, leaving OGL/DX/Compute(Non-tensor) to be less of an improvement.

Wow then it seems the timeline might be stretched further based on what you said. That'll add to my consideration to purchase that laptop now...

Wow, I wouldn't have known that. I realize that the GPUs in laptop have lower wattage to generate less heat. Anyhow, the Legion 5 is looking really attractive now. The only thing that is holding me back is the more than 8 weeks of estimated shipping. lol

Ryzen 5000 might be launching together with Nvidia 30 series mobile GPUs, which i guess will be in Q1 2021. For availability, probably have to wait until Q2/Q3 2021

Nvidia has been on a two year cadence. It'll take 6 months before we're even seeing widespread availability of 30 series cards from aftermarket vendors. It took 1-1.5 years for the the 20 series to start making it into laptops, and that's probably what we'll see here again.

Hey, I think your RTX 2060 laptop would be a great choice because we obviosly dont know when the next gen would come to laptops plus the DLSS2.0 boost would give a huge upgrade on that RTX 2060. I am also on the look for a laptop but my budget is looking close to a 1650ti and a 4600h. Next gen lower tier will take long time probably so I am just gonna buy soon
