I plan to deploy a bare metal with around 48 people on it. and currently I am getting 2 machines. 1 is a Dual E5-2670v1 with 128GB RAM for about 89 a month and another is a Dual E5-2683v4 with 256gb ram for 199 a month. Which should I go for? Which would give good enough performance on windows per 32-48 people.  I plan to use Virtualizor with KVM.

Even if you get a machine with two E5-2683v4 you're looking at 1 core/2 threads per person if you only have 32 people on there. If you're down to a single CPU you're going to have 1 thread per person, the experience is going to be awful.

What do you mean with bare metal? Are you planning to let people remote in and use this as a desktop? I don't really get what you mean here. Either way those machines are ol and a similarly specced e5 2670v1 can be had for 2 and a half months of pay. Those machines are dirtcheap on ebay. The v4 is more expensive but still in half a years time of monthly payments you could have easily bought one.

Wait, you're planning to run 48 Windows virtual-machines on a single server? Are you fucking serious?

Well I could do that too. Its not a big deal to get those on ebay. But yes remote in and use it as a desktop

On the 128GB RAM machine it would be 32. On the 256GB RAM machine i plan on 48. Planning to allocate 4GB RAM for each VM

16 slow and old physical cores divided over to 32 VMs....uhh.

But that would mean that users on the first machine have a thread to them and on the second machine and 0.66 thread on the other. That is just not useable in any way shape or form. Even 4gb of ram isn't really useable for windows 10 use.

Alright so both not useable at all. Fair enough. Ill search for some better CPUs. What about the threadripper 3970X?

They are useable but not for the amount of users you want. What are you expecting the users to do on these systems?

Well I plan on having 32-48 machines mostly for reselling so it would mostly have different use cases but im assuming the windows VMs would be stressed out. I would assume use cases to be encoding video, streaming, discord bots, game servers and website etc. Would like to have as many chrome tabs open just as an extra benchmark justi n case now that I think about it to test RAM speeds and usage too. Also just edited to mention the dual 2683v4

For 48 people that would still be 1.33 thread a person which basically means everything part from a low end website, little used discord bot or game server would work. Even with only 32 people it would be 2 threads a person and the will not be usable for encoding video, streaming, higher traffic website, higher use bot or higher player/more intense game server.

What if I reduced it to 8 people. What will be the performance like then?

On the dual v4 server? Plenty for most tasks. Streaming video would still be a bit limited to 2 or so streams. Encoding still would probs be better off on the users own machine.

Ah gotcha. What about an Epyc 7402?
