Flight Simulater 2020 performance issue

Wadzinsky

I am getting less than desirable performance in MS Flight Sim (even for my specific system specs)  When running RTSS, I never see my GPU go above 65% utilization in any given graphic setting.  I'm thinking it might be a CPU bottleneck, but video's on YouTube are showing my same CPU with less RAM and lesser video cards getting well above 30fps and GPU usage in the upper 90%'s

I'm running the latest BIOS for my board, latest graphics drivers as well.

My system specs are:

ASRock Fatal1ty AB350-Gaming-ITX/ac

Ryzen 5 3600

32gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200

EVGA RTX-2070 Super

3 Samsung EVO 850-860 SSD's for OS and Games (games are on separate from OS drives)

My son has a similar setup that performs much better than mine

ASUS Tuf Gaming X570-Plus

Ryzen 7 3700

16gb DDR4 3200

EVGA RTX-2080

2 Samsung EVO 860 Drives for Games

1 Samsung EVO 970 nvme for OS

His load times are much faster than mine, even with half the RAM, his graphics card performs marginally better than the 2070 Super and his CPU is a bit better than mine.  Could the performance difference lie more in the fact I am running a 1st gen Ryzen board considering similar setups to mine are also performing better?  Or would it really lie in the CPU?  I'm certain my setup should be performing better than it does.

No, that's not the problem. I'm also using 3rd gen 3700X with an X370 motherboard and I've got no issues.

What's your CPU load when playing?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

Generally around 35-40% with spikes up to 85

Strange, especially that you mentioned not exceeding 65% GPU usage in that game. Are other games running fine?

You could try uninstalling the GPU drivers via DDU and clean installing them (if you haven't already)

All my other games run fine.  I know this this game in particular is very CPU intensive tho.  With task manager open, I see 6 threads are almost pegged at 100%, but my son's computer is the same way.  It's not using the whole CPU in either case and his single thread performance isn't drastically better than mine

** I will try a DDU and reinstall of the graphics driver tho.  I have not done that yet

This is a pretty common complaint amongst Nvidia GPU owners right now. It seems as though the game just randomly works fine for some and really badly for others. I've heard of people with 2070s outperforming people with 2080TIs.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

Sounds like a driver issue,i haven't updated ever since 431.60 came out because the changes that came with 436.02 lowered performance in most games, but increased performance in small amount of games.

I can't say, its purely anecdotal but the Steam Community page for MSFS2020 has been a shitshow since launch and by far the biggest number of people saying the game runs badly are Nvidia owners.

It shouldn't be a problem with an R5 3600. It should perform well, here's screenshot of a task manager CPU utilization graph that I found (source) :
index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=632
Even with a 2080Ti the 3800X is at less than half total CPU usage, with the first 4-5 threads being pinned the most. A 6C/12T 3600 with a slower GPU shouldn't see much difference, if any.

Interesting.. Task manager shows the cpu running at 4.3ghz.  The best mine shows is 4.2.  In any case, it's unlikely 100mhz in either direction would bare a significant impact.  I'll do some playing around to see if I can come up with anything.

** OMG i'm dumb.  That's a 3800!!

Pardon the washed out appearing image.  It's a HDR screenshot.

I DDU'd my driver, set my 3D performance to Max Performance (it was on optimal power) and my GPU usage went WAY up.  This is a 4k shot with settings all on ultra and I am getting almost 30fps.  I think I found the fix... Sorta..  Setting the graphics lower doesn't yield more FPS, but rather only less GPU usage.

The numbers in the upper corner represent:

CPU usage/temp

GPU usage/temp

RAM usage/Video RAM usage

FPS

1) FS2020 is currently a DX11 title. Meaning it's only working on 4 cores.

2) Don't expect 100fps with this game, a 2080Ti can't even hit 60fps at 4k with this game maxed out.

That being said, I have no issues running FS2020 on my system with an R5 3600 and 1660 Super on Ultra at 1080 and resolution scaling at 150%. I average around 25-32fps which isn't terrible.

Check this out, might help:

I'm just looking for a solid 30fps without degrading the visuals below high

I get a solid 30fps on my 1660 Super running on Ultra @ 1080p
